Summary. Appeasment is bad. But you have to judge the circumstances and options though.

In response, yes, the BBC absolutely needs to ignore those who are determined to hate it, and will always hate it, and are working to ensure it fails.

Chamberlain, i feel, gets a short shrift here because he died from pancreatic cancer soon after Dunkirk, he handed power over to Churchill with no fuss.

But he was not available to set the record straight, and the nation needed a Hero in Churchill, so few corrected the record on this issue.

Because of this policy of appeasment, the UK was better prepared for War when it finally broke out in '39. We were able to hold Air Superiority during the Battle of Britain in '40 (at some points we had more planes than pilots), and stand as a fortess island for a period of time.

Chamberlain returned home with his peice of paper, a hollow promise from Adolf, but at that moment the UK was in no state to engage in War, he did immediately sign orders for Spitfires and Hurricanes which mordernised the RAF. He began putting the UK on a war footing in preparation.

However (this is my unpopular opinion), while Appeasment was absolutely a shit deal for central Europe as the Nazis marched on, in that moment there was no other option available to Chamberlain. (similar in terms of the UK appeasing Trump now while avoiding engagement with Putin).

OK, this is true in this case... But (as always) its going to be more complicated that that.

The most famous moment of appeasment, the one that Churchill was quoted critising here, was that of Chamberlain offering appeasment to Hitler. This is often cited as the moment WW2 became inevitable.

Good question. 3 reasons.

1. Trumps beef has always been with Obama. Its his kryptonite.

2. The announcment was yesterday, not the ceremony, so there are no pictures of Ms Machado receiving her prize.

3. We can do it again when it happens. Trump will like that.
