The journal @nature.com asked, "Could tracking animals’ health help to avert the next pandemic?"

We at the CWHC would emphatically say yes!

Avian influenza is sweeping the globe and infecting dozens of species. Advocates of an approach called One Health are calling for broad surveillance of wildlife, livestock and pets.

Les #caribous n’ont vraiment pas besoin d’une menace supplémentaire.

Le ver des méninges (ver du cerveau), un parasite du cerf de Virginie, a été détecté chez des caribous en Alberta.

Obviously I care a great deal about #wildlife , working for the CWHC @cwhc-rcsf.bsky.social , but I'm also a sports fan. In that light, I found this to be a very interesting article:

#AvianInfluenza continues to be a massive #OneHealth challenge, killing wildlife across the planet in a global #panzootic (which is a #pandemic in animals). The @cwhc-rcsf.bsky.social continues to work with our federal, provincial, and territorial partners to monitor Its effects in Canada.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza caused a mass die-off in Eurasian cranes during their autumn migration through Germany, France and Spain. More than 18,000 dead cranes were reported dead in Germany alone. The full demographic impact of this mortality on the crane population needs to be assessed.

Canada’s northern mountains are biodiversity powerhouses - home to endemic plants, rich valley-bottom habitats, and key migratory corridors. But these ecosystems are rapidly changing as the climate warms 🏔️

Worth keeping an eye on this #OneHealth threat.
New Fact Sheet for Producers: The Asian longhorned tick hasn’t been found in Canada, but Theileria orientalis Ikeda was detected in an imported cow in October 2025. This parasite can cause serious illness and losses in cattle.
