I wonder what they were taught at teacher training college. Of course many supply teachers had no teaching qualifications although most of them were graduates in some relevant discipline like forestry. I'd guess that all they learned at training college was how to cause maximum pain with no bruises.

My parent didn't care. They were just hard working folk who paid their taxes and did not make waves. But my best pal had a mother who was a local magistrate and tough as leather, and she gave the headmaster a piece of her mind. Then we got music lessons at another school.

Challenging these people was a waste of time. I asked the bone idle trombone player why, after the previous music teacher had given me an A, he had given me a B. Hard to explain when we were never tested and no homework was assigned. He just gurgled.

We had a good music teacher in High School but when he left, the replacements were 2 bone idle musicians. One of them would just put on an LP and tell us to listen. Not how to listen. Then he would pretend to do marking. But since he never assigned any homework, we knew that he had no marking to do.

Actually, I am surprised that teachers at our sixth form kept on hitting pupils because some of them were big enough to punch back. But we knew that hitting a teacher would lead to even worse punishments. In retrospect, I think that some of these incidents I should have reported to the police.

The women teachers were the worst: if you did not jump when she said "jump", you'd get slapped really hard across the face. We had to obey stupid rules: once I spoke in the corridor, for which I received three strokes of the cane. Almost broke my hand.

I can only speak from experience. At all of the schools that I attended in England, most of the teachers were more interested in hitting children than they were in teaching. I was punched and slapped regularly from junior school until sixth form. It left me with a burning hatred of schoolteachers.

I went to a comprehensive where most of the teachers were on supply, who were only there because the Job Centre had said, "take this job teaching French/Chemistry/English or you get no more giros".
