Material culture historian, exploring the history of Cypriot archaeology and ancient Cypriot collections in UK museums. Ceramics fan. ECR Associate at the Institute of Classical Studies, London and Associate Lecturer in Classics at the Open University.
Today I am channelling the old windmill of Emile Verhaeren, 'qui tourne et, las, qui tourne et meurt' www.poetica.fr/poeme-548/em... (I have a cold and the marking is ongoing). I am 'triste et faible et lourde et lasse, infiniment'.

A visual summary of the year on Bluesky - the word cloud looks about right, with thanks to @anisota.net

Once again, huge thanks to @magnifyzoology.bsky.social for inventing and running #museum30!
Here are the prompts for #museum30 2025 - the ninth year!

If you would like to join in all you need to do is share an image, inspired by each days' prompt, throughout November. Don't forget to include #museum30 so other's can find your posts.

Who’s Who in Cypriote Archaeology - how have I never come across this before? Published in 1971. About half the entries are men, just under 20% women, and the rest unclear (possibly women using their initials for strategic reasons - but probably skewing male). Time for an updated version!

Ah, The Brotherton, how I have missed you.

Actually, this is the lore behind choosing my career path.
Whatever the privations of this world were, she went to sleep every night profoundly grateful for the fact that whatever she had to face in the morning it wouldn't be a hundred almost identical photographs of moodily lit tubes of toothpaste.

Day 30: Why museums? For the joy, wonder, excitement and curiosity that can be sparked by an encounter with an ancient object. #Museum30

From my commonplace book, circa 1995. RIP Tom Stoppard ❤️

Day 28: Water. This animated background creates the perfect setting for these ancient Cypriot model boats, at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden #Museum30

Day 28: Mural. I love this mural titled ‘Echoes’ on a pub in Mabgate, inspired by Burmantofts tiles and a tribute to the cultural heritage of Leeds, by the artist Add Fuel #Museum30

Once again I find myself in the car outside my daughter’s ballet lesson with a flask of coffee and a new journal article #NotAllBad

Day 27: Achievement. The repatriation of an ancient Cypriot Black on Red juglet which was put up for sale at a UK auction house - an achievement for all concerned. #Museum30

Day 26: Moving. Merrily we roll along… Small ancient Cypriot warrior in large chariot, Cyprus Museum #Museum30

Day 25: Danger. ‘Danger: Do not operate’. British Steel exhibit at Kirkleatham Museum - part of my own family’s heritage. #Museum30

Day 24: Specialist. Recently I learned that precise dating of pottery repairs is of interest to specialist conservators, allowing them to study developing conservation techniques. So a 1936 letter saying ‘The pottery arrived broken but I have mended it’ is of more than historical interest! #Museum30

Opened a box I don’t think I’ve unpacked since university. That is… going back a bit.

Day 23: Animal. I love zoomorphic ancient Cypriot ceramics, half way between pot and animal - this one from the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia #Museum30

Day 22: Walk. An ancient Cypriot Black on Red jug from New Walk Museum, Leicester #Museum30

Day 21: Careers. Thinking today of Violet Crowther (1884-1969), daughter of Henry Crowther, museum curator in Leeds. She and her sisters Virté and Vera 'helped' Crowther considerably in his museum work, and Violet ran the Abbey House Museum but was never promoted above Assistant Curator 🤔 #Museum30

Day 20: Diary. Sometimes a diary entry can shed new light on collection histories. The diary of William Aldam (1813-1890) for 28 Sept 1870 reveals that he paid for the Cypriot amphora donated by him to the Museum of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, but didn't choose or own it. #Museum30

Day 19: Magic. In her book 'Deaccessioning Museum Objects', @durrantjenny.bsky.social describes the 'magic moment' when a visitor connects with a museum object. Much of my work is about this 'magic moment', facilitating object encounters, meeting them myself, and trying to capture them in writing.

Day 18: Photograph. Sometimes photographs bring out details more clearly, such as this amphora handle stamp, ΚΛΕΑΡΧΟΥ ΝΑΜΟΥ, identifying its place and period of production #Museum30
