I’m an American living in Scotland for the past 30 years. I have worked in local history museums as well as in education. Besides researching my family tree, I can be found gardening, reading, walking, or sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.

It’s a grey miserable day here with icy rain so to cheer me up I’m posting these lovely recent comments from the visitors book at St John’s Kirk - Walls Heritage #Orkney. Our first exhibition, with the help of Orkney Museums. A lot of work! #NorthWallsAndBrims #OnePlaceStudy #FamilyHistory

Dunblane Museum has received a request for images of the Dunblane Motor Company garage between 1960 and 1965. Dunblane Motor Company used to be where the M&S store is now located, as well as at the top of the High Street, where St Mary’s Court housing is now located

It's Mobile Libraries Day! #MobileLibrariesDay2025
Today we celebrate the vital library services on wheels throughout Scotland.
Sadly today's weather means Leona can't get out west, but we will have the big van outside HQ this morning, if anyone would like to take a look inside!

When living in Dundee, Mary Shelley also spent time visiting Perthshire. Perth is mentioned in Frankenstein a couple of times but her book The Last Man is largely set in Perthshire.

Does Mary count as a one of our #PerthWomenOnWikipedia?
Mary Shelley's time living near Dundee on the "blank and dreary northern shores of the Tay" fired her imagination 💭

It was here her "true compositions, the airy flights of my imagination, were born." Discover how Scotland shaped her novel, Frankenstein, in our article by Professor Daniel Cook.

I'm saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Elspeth King, the legendary curator of the People's Palace, and a fierce advocate for Glasgow and its history.

This was fascinating on the release of the film adaptation of Alasdair Gray's "Poor Things".

Tomorrow is #Halloween which is a great time to read a spooky story. One of our favourite spooky stories is The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irvine. First published in 1820 it tells the story of a terrifying headless horseman, but that's not why we like it. 🎃

This weekend the clocks fall back, and we all get an extra hour of sleep, so we’re taking a look at some of the clocks which can be seen on buildings in Stirling City Centre.

Perhaps the most striking and colourful clock can be seen on the Tolbooth tower.

I was intrigued to see which two of the Vatican’s ten Raphael tapestries were chosen for today’s unprecedented service in the Sistine Chapel. The tapestries are very rarely shown - was Pope Leo XIV conveying any message in the choice?

Making archival boxes:
Human🤝Machine

If you don't fancy watching a box being made for 90 seconds, I would look away now.

Our conservation team, and their big scary machine, make around 2000 boxes every year. They can be made to almost any size and dimension, and can be completely customised.
