My current focus is on risks/harms + #emtech particularly #XR ( #VirtualReality #AugmentedReality) and things we can do to make XR spaces happier, safer and more secure.

I may post a bit about that, some other crim stuff too (events, jobs, calls, interesting new pubs). And maybe cats. We'll see.

And this is Dima, the baby mammoth.

Awww.

But also, kinda creepy.
Postcard showing an image of a mummified baby mammoth. The wording underneath reads "Dima from Siberia. Baby mammoth. Found 23 June 1977 in Siberia. Age 39 thousands years plus 7-8 months. Weight 90 kgs. Wants to meet you." Aww. But also a bit creepy...

Anyway, I still have some Olympics swag. Here’s a giant pencil and a tiny badge.
A rectangular badge the size of a pound coin saying MOSCOW 1980 under a stylised picture of a gymnast A big fuck off foot long red pencil with Cyrillic lettering (transliteration: MOSCOW 1980) next to a pound coin for scale.

My mother was tight-lipped when I told her. My grandfather muttered something about missed opportunities to argue the socialist case. Thatcher's security detail no doubt reviewed their procedures.

I can't remember what I said.

Probably the baby mammoth.

Thatcher had been PM for about 3 weeks at this point. She was also the most loathed person in my household, and I knew it. Even aged 10.

I don't know which of us was more surprised but she regained her composure faster than me and asked me "And what did YOU enjoy seeing the most?"

I went off on a wander alone, and noticed a crowd of people. Being rather nosy, and (at the age of 10) rather small, I wormed my way into the scrum and popped up in the middle to find myself mere inches from the most famous woman in Britain.

The exhibition was basically a big propaganda exercise for the Soviet Union, with lacquer work, paintings, dioramas, a moon rover on a simulated lunar landscape, lots of Olympics 1980 tat, and a baby mammoth called Dima.

In May 1979 my mother took me on a daytrip to London to the USSR Exhibition, a cultural and industrial showcase that had taken over the Earls Court Exhibition Centre.

As we are marking her 100th birthday, I think it's finally time to tell the story of when I met Margaret Thatcher.

Learning BASIC on a Research Machines 380z.

My 1kb ZX81. The joy of a 64kb RAM pack.

Next, a ZX Spectrum and - what magic is this? Colour! The feeling of achievement after entering pages of machine code - and creating a game.

Happy days.

Yes I am also old. (And older than you my friend!)
