Watching the Mahmood announcement and debate. Tory backbencher (Karen Bradley) suggests putting refugees into debt and making them repay during the rest of their lives. Mahmood says she’ll think about it.

1/2 If you nationalise the whole economy, you give absolute power to a civil servant in an office somewhere to decide whether you move house, whether & where you get job, when you travel & how. Need to spend more time not working? That's not up to you. You must be fitted into a national plan.

Two observations:
1) We didn't have penicillin or heart transplants in 100 AD. What's your point?
2) It may interest the Leader of the Opposition to learn that during C2nd (during a lethal pandemic in the Roman world) Christians set up hospitals for the sick & hostels for the poor.
