The Hierarch of Fire was destined to be popular. A young Hierarch, ascended from the Warrior Caste, a war hero, brooding and mysterious. But what cemented his popularity more than anything else was his sudden disappearance, just weeks after his ascension.

Vile went on one of her magic adventures and came back with a wizard from another world. Who fucking knows! We gave him a makeover so he could blend in but by the time we finished he had to ascend back to wherever. I got his number, but in our world, it's a pizza hut's.

Terra - a red furred dragon belonging to Terra the Wizard - takes a mirror selfie in an elaborate outfit. His top is a blue crop top, the back of which extends into a cape seemingly lined with stars. He's wearing grey leggings with slit hips, and winged converse which I frankly phoned in. To one side, Vile is barely visible, my black-feathered dragon sona. Towering over Terra, she has her midriff out, with an elaborate golden belt holding up some kind of black garment. She's visible both in the foreground and in the reflection. Her tail and Terra's are holding up his cape, showing off the starry pattern. Both their outfits are heavily accented with gold. Outside the window, a portion of Atlanta is visible.

I played Proximate off the back of this and loved it. I'm still digesting it but at a surface level I adored the character writing. I've met all of these people.

Man I haven't thought about the knights of columbus in probably a decade. Funnily enough my brother was one and our parents didn't approve. (To my vague recollection - I remember there was *something* about the arrangement they didn't like if not membership itself.)

I knew a hydra kid when I was in school in Alaska. We weren't friends, but his dads chaperoned a lot of school events and they were sick as fuck. Oh - they weren't gay, the original just died on a construction site in the 90s.

Hydrae are an open species in the World Below. More to come.
The World Below is an alternate Earth populated by
anthropomorphic mythical creatures. The starting
population of every species appears all at once, each
species born from one of nine Sins. The supernatural has
long been observed, but only recently understood.

Although hydras are concentrated mainly in Greece,
with the primary exception of immigrant blocs in the
United States, their power is world famous. When a hydra
is killed, two copies spontaneously appear nearby, or as
near as possible. Their cause of death, no matter how
severe, is cured utterly. The two hydra copies are perfect
replicas of the original at the instant of their death,
complete with a disorienting sense of continuity.

If the original was fertile to start with, only one of
the two retains the ability to reproduce. All hydrae can
be spared from death in this way once. For some, it
happens twice. For a rare few, death may be evaded three
times, for a total of eight copies. Three is the observed limit,
though tales have always existed of hydras
who have split four or more times.

Hydrae are born from Folly, a Sin
associated with impulsiveness. Sin
represents a predisposition to a
worldview, not a fundamental
nature. It is up to each individual the actions
their worldview causes them to take, or if indeed they fall into that
worldview at all. Where dragons see the most value in the
influence they personally have, and sirens are most
concerned with the impressions they make, the key motivator
of a typical hydra is their place in history. Hydras are all but guaranteed the most
legacy over other species, and they are driven to make the very most of it. All hydras have four names: a first name, two
middle names, and a family name. Like most, they
go by their first name, with the family name
representing an affiliation. Their two middle names
are the names that will go to their clones.
Traditionally, the second name goes to the clone
standing more to the north at the moment of their
creation, with the third name going to the clone to
the south. A hydra splitting can be a messy affair,
with possessions both consider rightfully theirs
under dispute. Through this system, both can at
least agree on what to call the other. Each hydra is
soon tasked with coming up with two more names,
to pass on to potential clones of their own.

One of the most striking features of a hydra is
their "crown" - an anatomical horn, consisting of
bone fused to the skull and a keratin sheath. The
five spikes of a crown are gender dimorphic, with
a male crown longest in the center, and a female's
longest on the sides. A hydra's horn grows through
puberty and then stops. For most of history, a
broken horn was a done deal, though modern
endocrinology makes horn regrowth trivial.
Similarly, transgender hydrae have an easy time
transitioning from one crown to the other. Regular
HRT stimulates the growth of the desired spike(s)
and frill(s), and causes the unwanted frill(s) to
absorb back into the body. From there, removing
the unwanted spike(s) is a safe and inexpensive
procedure.

The tongue of a hydra is very sensitive, with the
greatest taste buds density of all myths. The shape
of their long tongue mirrors the shape at the
end of their tail. The alt text here is the remaining text of the previous page. See replies for page 3 alt text.

Hydras are one of few myths capable of being
fully aquatic. Though they are often recognized as
reptile-like, a set of gills filtering between their
ribs allows them to repurpose their diaphragm.
Instead of filling lungs with air, relaxation of the
diaphragm draws water through the gills, then
contraction forces it back out. Hydrae are best
adapted to breathing salt water. Breathing fresh
water will gradually cause electrolyte deficiency
over the course of several hours to a few days.

Like fire salamanders, hydrae possess retractable
webbing between their fingers. A long tendon
hoists the membranes like a curtain, allowing for
both full use of their hands and enhanced speed in
the water.

During the Greek dry season, a hydra’s frills
become brightly colored, with patterns unique to
the individual. During the rainy season, colors
become more muted. Even in other parts of the
world with differing or inverted seasons, the frills
remain synchronized with the seasons of Greece.
Some hydras opt to use scale paint to cover up the
bright colors of their frills, either temporarily or for
the entire season. This paint is commonly used
year-round on the eyelash-like frills around the
eyes.

On the first page, the last paragraph wasn't indented when I almost posted it the first time, and now it's indented too much. Also, before tonight, hydrae didn't have nipples, then I accidentally mentioned them offhandedly on page 3, so they do now. Here's the original design before I started over:
Crude and shitty version featuring a less good hydra design

PAGE 3 ALT TEXT, fair warning page 3 is exhaustive description of their junk. Otherwise: a silly WIP version that I published in SOUP! fan zine. Thank god I figured out text formatting.
Someone who expects the first hydra they meet
to have two (or more) heads has misunderstood a
very old joke. Hydrae have either hemipenes or
hemiclitores, the former being inverted inside the
body until being exverted by erectile tissue.
Bifurcated genitals are often seen among myths,
though it is notable that a hydra’s vagina isn’t
bifurcated to match.

What’s truly unique about a hydra’s sex is that
below the hemipenes is a patch of hide known as the
seminal reservoir. To most, the reservoir is just
called the same thing as testicles: “balls,” “nuts,” or
if someone cares that there are no balls within,
“sack.” The sack is difficult to notice at first, then
over the course of stimulation, it bulges outwards as
it fills with semen. It’s a sensitive region, much like
the external testicles it resembles, so while squeezing
the contents out manually is possible, most hydras
dislike the sensation. Similarly, filling the reservoir
without climax causes discomfort. It remains in its
full state while semen is gradually reabsorbed or
leaked from the genital slit. Complete fullness is also
said to be unpleasant. This causes the hemiepenes to
become extremely sensitive as the body attempts to
release. Of course, kinky freaks exist wherever you
go, and many hydra find all these sensations
satisfying, if not pleasurable. Female hydrae have two distinct orgasm cycles
on each side of the body. Stimulating only the left
clitoris, left nipple, left g-spot (and there are two,
located side by side), a female hydra will achieve a
perfectly normal orgasm. Depending on the
individual, she may require a break, or experience
hypersensitivity, but only on the left side. The right
side will be as ready to "begin" as before she started.
The holy grail of a female hydra's sex life is the
"double orgasm," each side of her body stimulated
roughly evenly, resulting in two climaxes at the same
time. Keeping stimulation even is somewhat of a
myth, however: it's rare both sides are equal in their
needs.

Hormone replacement therapy affects this cycle
in a unique way. Trans male hydras will find that
testosterone unifies their orgasm cycles, causing
every climax to be a double climax. Trans female
hydras will gain this double cycle for the first time,
each hemipenis ejaculating simultaneously, but
triggering orgasm separately. Prostate stimulation
in these cases stimulates both sides, resulting in a
guaranteed double, much like trans males experience.

Hydrae are born from the Sin of Folly.
Eight Sins remain.
