Mountains and flat basins. The perfect balance. Only mountains? You can't even tell where the horizon is. Up and down are wobbly. Is that a cliff or a mesa?. Is heaven a pit one can fall into?. Am I tethered just by will?.

Did you know that Earth's most & 2nd most powerful/explosive #volcanic #eruptions of the century were submarine? We are discussing both the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (pictured) & the 2012 Havre eruptions, both in the Kingdom of Tonga, this week in my Submarine volcanoes course at #URIGSO 🧪🌋🌊
Two true color satellite views of the rising and spreading tephra plume from the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai eruption, from the geostationary satellite GOES-West. (a) Aerial emission linked with the volcanic activity on 13 January; (b) Ash plume emitted during the main eruption on 15 January. Red lines depict the coastline and the yellow triangle depicts the position of the HTHH volcano. I should have written "naturalistic fallacies" but the word limit forced my hand. I'd say it's both, in the sense that they must imply that the very essence of reality orders other people to comply with them. The supernatural aspect is used to invoke spiritual (non existent) rewards and punishments.

“The existence of even one ex gay dismantles the central lie of homosexuality, that it is an innate characteristic from birth and therefore should have human rights awarded to it.”

Same shit different era.
Chloe Cole: The existence of even one detransitioner dismantles the central lie of transgenderism, that it is an innate characteristic from birth and therefore should have human rights awarded to it.

And then the gaslighting starts. Thats only Christianity! Certainly no other religions propagate systemic abuse! None of the people certainly not the women have been abused by any other type of religious institutions!

The only kind of systemic, institutional trauma people on the left will consistently tell you you’re being too dramatic about and being too harsh about is religious trauma

Flat earthers and young earth creationists are not just silly fools who believe stupid stuff. They are malignant thieves who purposefully attack consistent bodies of knowledge that threaten their naturalist fallacies, that would expose them as abusive leaders, parents, and partners.

Absurdity facilitates abuse. They undermine people's understanding of reality to justify hierarchy and unfair transactions; the promise of spiritual rewards in exchange for material tributes is a classic. And it gets rephrased in corporate and political environments.

Listen. If you didn't want to be seen as the Twitter escape pod, you shouldn't have deliberately fostered a community of people so united by their contempt for arbitrary authority and love of absolute free speech that they were willing to abandon a platform they'd been using for 15 years

Ah yes, the race of Americans.
The U-word slur.
Yes, poor Americans, truly the most oppressed minority.

The Ezra Klein style of caring about political “strategy” over consistent moral principles and values of your own reminds me of how a lot of pop culture consumers obsessively track box office and chart performance rather than just evaluating based on whether things are good or if they like them

And they acted like brats, like spoiled children on a tantrum, the moment they were told "no". "What do you mean I don't get to treat a group of people like shit? I've been very good and I'm very special and smart. I've earned it".

It's interesting how so many British transphobes started off as vaguely progressive liberals that, for some reason, really wanted to find a minority they could hate. Like a little treat, a sweet dessert, a god-given right to a "justified" bigotry they could exercise freely.

Even small, locally relevant rich people are terrifying. They roam the streets of small towns and cities with a heightened sense of self-importance, extremely fragile egos, and trigger-happy access to tools that they can abuse. Selling services or products to them is straight up dangerous.

Awhile ago I came across a paper that showed a type of trap door caldera roof failure that involved actually uplifting one side of the caldera roof, but for the life of me I can’t find it again. Does anyone have any paper suggestions that discuss this type of caldera failure?

I wish. But they still redirect new atheists to the right by deflecting from more complete understandings of social issues.
contrafidem.bsky.social
Come to think about it, New Atheism mirrors evangelical Christianity in that they are defined by a market. No wonder they converge when they are both defined by profit.
There's also the classism at the root of NA that reinforced a "personal responsibility" approach to social issues.
