One thing this cortisol spike of a novel does not skimp on is the many ways war can ruin human bodies. Even so, when I came upon the phrase “boots still potted with feet” I shouted “goddamn!” to no one in particular.

The last quarter century has been one long experiment in how much we’re willing to tolerate the incremental loss of liberty in the name of supposed security. Proposals like this to turn back the clock deserve serious attention.
