"'The tail wagging the dog' is a popular metaphor for relationships in which a vendor winds up manipulating its customer. In the case of Palantir and the Army, the tail got inside the dog and has now burst out of its chest, like the xenomorph in Alien."

I was thinking that maybe, more than 20 years after the start of the Iraq war, media coverage would be more skeptical and less sycophantic

No such luck

The Minnesota shooter who killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman wasn’t a lone wolf, insists a scholar of political violence.

And the myth of the isolated madman obscures the networked reality of far-right violence and makes it harder to prevent the next attack.

For anyone who thinks I'm joking here (and it's funny, but no) rumor is that the National Guard deployed in LA was sent under a 29 day order to avoid housing allowances, which means they have to fully pay for their own shelter. In LA. Zero notice. Durable fascisms don't shortchange the muscle.
Sad as it is to say, the greatest consoling thought I have as we march towards a fascism is how unlikely it is to last not because people are brave, or moral, or prepared to combat it... but because it's expensive to maintain, and the man driving us to it couldn't even keep a fucking casino afloat.

New study shows link between inactivity & pain. But what if people are moving less BECAUSE of pain? Whenever you see science news about a “link”, remember: you can always interpet it more than one way! Like a Rubin’s vase/face.

Folks, what are we doing here? Can we please make the AI crazy stop? The idea of being able to retrieve info from an article via query is one thing, but the anthropomorphization of is over-the-top. The fact that this article is about chatbots is (chef's kiss).

If generative AI were as great as the tech companies want us to believe, they wouldn't be pushing it so hard on us. They'd be charging for it, not forcing us to click away ten times a day from pop ups trying to convince us to use it.

Of course.

Special shoutout to my colleagues who thought "diversity had gone too far," especially the ones who pretended that diversity statements were oppression.
"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

It's 2015. President Barack Obama has accepted a "sky palace" jumbo jet from the Qatari government, which he'll own after he leaves office. "Everybody relax," he says in an interview with the New York Times. Everyone does. The networks then televise the military parade in his honor on his birthday.

Protests aren’t the only tool in the anti-authoritarian toolkit, but they’re incredibly important. Protests help us see each other; they make it feel safer to refuse to obey the dictator, and make it more possible for us to organize mass non-cooperation.

It’s an essential step in the process.

I asked the one high ranking policeman I saw on 5th Ave why there were so few police. He said “We did not expect anything like this. Don’t tell anyone but I’ve only got 44 officers out here — and it’s a great crowd, great event, no incidents.”
I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff
