Amazing crowd last night for the classic samurai flick HARAKIRI. Up next is the hilarious yet touching HAROLD AND MAUDE.
The Sackville Cinematheque is screening HARAKIRI this Friday, March 28, at the Owens Art Gallery @owensartgallery.bsky.social.
Renowned director Masaki Kobayashi's elegant and austere style perfectly suits the material. Meanwhile, Japanese star Tatsuya Nakadai delivers a searing and unforgettable performance. Awarded the Special Jury prize by the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, HARAKIRI is riveting cinema.
Former samurai Hanshirō Tsugumo requests to commit seppuku, or harakiri, within the manor of a local feudal lord, using the opportunity to expose the hypocrisies and injustices of a corrupt class system.
A mesmerizing, often brutal, but thoroughly compulsive film, HARAKIRI (1962) manages to elevate the usually pulpy Japanese chambara, or samurai, genre into something approaching high art.
"All of my pictures are concerned with resisting an entrenched power. That's what HARAKIRI is about." -- Masaki Kobayashi

Screening this Friday, March 28, at the @owensartgallery.bsky.social.

@cinesackville.bsky.social has been on a roll this fall. It's been a highlight of my year to make posters for them.
I got a wonderful Christmas gift from some friends at our Tibbs Eve party last night (yes, I know, it's early). So happy to have caught this movie for the first time this year as it is now an absilute favourite. Poster designed by @patrickallaby.bsky.social for @cinesackville.bsky.social
