The context that's missing here is "unconditionally" and the fact that women do more labor than men.
So, essentially, what this man is admitting (which is not news to any woman who's been romantic with men, not just hetero women) is that men want praise for doing nothing or the bare minimum.

something you notice being the perpetually single friend: how friends/family often get demoted or disregarded the moment a new romantic partner enters the chat…like we were all just stand-ins until you were no longer single. a friend has one time to display this behavior with me before I’m out.
People treat non-romantic relationships in a very laissez-faire way and I’m just not with that. I don’t reserve my best for my romantic partners.
