Until I find an old favorite, a book that changed the way I think, a book that brought me deep into another world, another person’s experience, a time long ago and far away. And then, I’m sure that’s my favorite.

I love to think about all the people that will come after me, absorbing the words that came out of someone else’s mind, someone else’s experiences and I often think about leaving the next reader a note, tucked deep inside the book, but I don’t. Someday I will. Yes, they’re my favorite.

But then, but then, I get a brand new hardcover book, the bright white pages, the way that I can bury my face into the middle of the book and know that I’m the first person to do that.

And then I find an old paper back, the pages yellowing, a few of them dog eared with pencil marks highlighting other readers’ favorite passages. I love to think about how the words they were reading affected them. Definitely. They’re my favorite...
