Ok, so pop culture is about Thanksgiving today, so we covered Alice’s Rest. (we’ve been studying protest songs) and Charlie Brown and then I found the 1982 Macy’s Parade on youtube. Wow is it a trip! Milton Berle was Cinderella paired with Ricky Schroeder as the prince! 🤣

Speaking of jive, I once had a black student call a white one out on using the n word in the middle of class (the call out not the word). White kid responds with “Don’t call me honkey” (he didn’t). After which the only other black kid whispers to me “‘Ms. S, what’s a honkey?” #HATM

Speaking from a purely local perspective, why no one has made a movie about Margaret Chase Smith is astounding. I saw a play about her that was fantastic!
Also, Samantha Smith. Young peace activist, visited the Soviet Union, covered elections for kids, and had a tragic young death. #HATM

Well, curiosity drove me to dig in to some family research. Turns out my 4th and 5th great grandfathers were members of the Massachusetts Militia, Minot’s company and were part of the fight at Lexington and Concord. #HATM

Re: smallpox innoculation. That is knowledge that came from a African man, Onesimus, who was enslaved to Cotton Mather. They would use cowpox for the source virus. it would be used to fight an epidemic in Boston in 1729. #HATM

Knox will retire to land his wife inherited in Maine in Thomaston. His house, Montpelier, is now a museum. Maine’s first granite fort will be built nearby at the mouth of the Penobscot River which is named after him. Also Maine’s most recent county was created in 1860 will bear his name. #HATM

Heads up Mainers! I saw a FB post this morning about these cameras being installed in South Portland.
A recent case in Texas US, illustrates how Flock, and other similar surveillance technology, is expanding the capacity to meld personal obsessions and the state’s interest at a systematic level.

An event that millions of New England children can regale you with in verse. Thanks to Mainer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. His grand-father was a general in the Revolutionary army. He wrote it as a warning about the Civil War. #HATM

Did I miss the mention of the monopoly the Tea Act created for the British East India company? Allowing them to undercut local merchants? It actually lowered the price of tea.
