Keep celebrating your PhD defenses, job offers, and awards! Keep telling us ALL the good things.

Joy & Hope are what keep us going when things look bleak. They are also forms of resistance.

As a Sociologist who has studied families and schools for nearly two decades, there are many things I want to say (or yell) about the new EO on Education. But for now I'll just say--if you want to achieve the (longstanding GOP) goal of privatizing public schooling, this is a great place to start. 1/

From an op-ed I wrote for Newsweek on the role elite schools played in creating people like Vance by promoting the meritocracy myth.

Schools like Harvard, Yale, and UPenn have long served as finishing schools for the wealthiest and the whitest of the old-money American elite.

I had no hail-mary requests for grade bumps this fall, and I just would like to thank the gods for that. A lovely way to end the fall term!

I am seeking a coauthor who wants to write about jokes in preschool classrooms. Must: love Spencer Cahill's work and have a symbolic interactionist sensibility. Preferred: a qualitatively-included graduate student seeking coauthorship opportunities.

I'm not joking!!!!!

My workplace just basically banned departments from making public statements, UNLESS they follow a highly articulated process. I have a lot of thoughts***, including that the policy prescribes an unusual amount of collective action for a place with no shared governance.

But…then how does Quebec punish parents for daring to have a baby??
My nervous, gobsmacked laugh yesterday when folks mentioned that the infant ratio in public child care is 2:1.

We’re stopped in Burlington and this lady is pacing the aisle of the bus spraying Axe body spray everywhere.

Is she a retired middle school teacher??

and now half the passengers are coughing so that’s great.
