Alice Notley passed away Monday night in Paris, where I'm writing from. This will come as a shock to many, but she was battling a number of maladies in recent months, and things had gotten difficult rapidly. Her work is out there. Please feel free to spread the word.

Alice Notley passed away yesterday evening in Paris. She said a few years ago, “What can we learn from the fact that we don’t die?” I’m heartbroken, & heartbroken for everyone who knew & loved her, her work.

It provides a lot to think abt in terms of how exposures to stressors or trauma line up with/or precede antisocial behaviors and preparation behaviors exhibited by mass shooters. Hits home that both acute and past events should be considered and that trauma inter./prev. has something to contribute.
It might be that trauma has a role in the rejection sensitivity / injustice collecting shooters can demonstrate, could be impacting their social functioning/social isolation…these are just two possibilities
Talking about it can feel like a suggestion of empathy for a person who has caused SO much harm. Further, lots of ppl experience trauma and don’t do this. But there is something here and whatever it is, it’s complex.
Trauma is just one of many complex, interacting factors that impact a trajectory to violence, but we really need to learn more abt its role in mass shooter behavior.
Don’t like that the lead image for this includes the shooter’s name and image but this articles provides the comprehensive details of the traumatic childhood events that the shooter was exposed to.

There are multiple ways in which survivors of this shooting could be double survivors of mass shootings. I find that very intense to realize.
This is also not the first mass public shooting at FSU or in Tallahassee. In 2014, a shooter attacked students and staff in the library. In 2018, a shooter motivated by misogyny/incel ideology attacked a yoga studio (that I took classes at when I lived there).
Thinking abt the articles noting that survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas attack are now survivors of a *second* school shooting.
To be clear: I don't know what the reality is. *But* the more likely reality is that they fought to keep the documents from being publicly released because the shooter intended for them to be instructive and helpful to future shooters.
For instance, I wonder if the general public assumed, at least in part, that the parents did not want the documents authored by this shooter released bc it would contribute to the right wing narrative.
Which is to say that that misinformation about shooters and shootings prevents productive public conversation and understanding of them.
There's no manifesto. The shooters' grievances had nothing to do with the Covenant School, with Christianity, and had *very* little (if anything) to do with the shooter's gender identity. I'm still learning, but to me, it's remarkable how similar this event and this shooter are to recent shootings.
All in the name of escalating anti-trans rhetoric and violence against the trans community.
The Nashville police released a report on the 2023 Covenant shooter and there's a lot to say. It's incredible how much false information has been used to create a story about this shooter and this event that is just *not true.*
