At CARFAC BC, we recognise the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples to own, control, and protect their cultural expressions and artistic heritage. 1/3

There are many online resources to help you identify inappropriate costumes, and to help you with tips for productive conversations about costumes.

We love the creativity of BC visual artists, and we hope you have a great Halloween that the entire community can enjoy! 6/6
As keepers, creators, and sharers of our culture, artists can be great ambassadors for inclusion and cultural safety; through leading by example, and by having friendly conversations to question disrespectful costume choices. Friends don’t let friends wear discriminatory costumes! 5/6
Some examples are dressing up as “Dia de los Muertos,” a religious ceremony not affiliated with Halloween, or dressing up as an Indigenous stereotype, or dressing up in a “fat suit.” 4/6

Major retailers frequently sell costumes that are racist, ableist, body-shaming, or discriminatory in some way, so unfortunately anti-inclusive costumes are widely available. 3/6

Respectful costumes do not adopt someone else's culture, skin colour, customs, traditions, speech, physical differences or disabilities, or way of being. 2/6

Happy Halloween! We may not always think of Halloween as an arts event, but many of us artists make our own costumes; incorporating skills in fashion design, sculpture, and performance. As with any art or creative expression, we can make choices that respect all cultures. 1/6

Hot on the heels of the Victoria Halloween Markets, comes the Haunted Holiday Market, back on my home turf in Nanaimo!
Hoping to have a couple more “felt mini squonks” along for the ride this time too, so there’s another excuse for you to swing by and say hello! 😉
We’ve had a few questions recently about exhibitions outside of gallery spaces! As always, the minimum fee goes up yearly, and these rates are for the 2026 schedule.

Something for our representatives to consider!

"For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back."

Artists of BC, what do you think about this?

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
