I’m a paper person. I have a kindle and it’s fine, but I rarely use it.

I like to see my progress through the thing. And the kindle doesn’t smell as good as books do.

I feel like most folks are fans of stories with cliffhangers—big or small. It keeps you interested in the tale.

How about a play with a cliffhanger? I always liked the end of Act One in Sondheim/Lapine’s Into the Woods.

The moors of Wuthering Heights have to be one of the first times I realized setting could be a character.

Now why won’t my surroundings mirror the play that is my life? I want storms of turmoil and self-doubt.

Going with THE Mentor—Athena in The Odyssey. I like when folks are there for people who are missing loved ones. Everyone can be your family. Everyone can guide others and help them. We need more of that, even if you have to do it incognito.

Patrick Bateman in American Psycho is my favorite. Everything from his perspective, learning his thoughts on things around him only to have to determine if he’s actually killing people or not—it is a great ride.

I don’t think it was when I read it, but now I like Dorothy Gale’s journey in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Finding home and finding the people of your tribe feels like what it’s all about.

Pretty pleased with the reading of the new play last night. Nice to hear new voices and see what works and what doesn’t. A day today to process the feedback I got and then back to drafting. #justwriteplays

Fun note: Lisa and I were classmates. I helped a bit with this one so SHE GRACIOUSLY MADE ME A CHARACTER IN IT BECAUSE SHE IS GREAT!

I don’t have anything off limits. I guess I just don’t read a lot of modern-era war books…? And sadly, sometimes high fantasy irks me with the names they make up and I can’t get through them. But I try.

Picked this up at a Dollar Tree by chance. Don’t know that I had ever read autobiographical fiction before (because is that really a thing??) but I really enjoyed My Life as a Russian Novel.

Probably because I love Russian novels.

Playwriting Mt. Rushmore:

Sarah Ruhl
Arthur Miller
Lynn Nottage
Wendy Wasserstein

All have written tight, emotional scripts I’m glad to know and that have changed me.

Special honorable mention:

Kathy Najimy and Mo Gaffney (because I love Parallel Lives!)
