I feel largely the same about this as I do about my observation that Alphinaud instinctively aligns himself with people of wealth and privilege wherever he goes: he has a good heart, good enough that if you point out his prejudices to him, he’ll work on them.

He reminds me of witnessing the dating habits of my college classmates and realizing for the first time that even interesting and emotionally attuned men were not exempt from being kind of sexist in ways they didn’t realize.

Alphinaud is fascinating because he’s an uppity little dork who was adored by his female classmates and is very sensitive and ALSO “picked up drawing to impress girls” and “refused to befriend boys because he couldn’t stand the idea of not being in charge”
