A colorful art print titled "Tätigkeit der Hypophyse," created in 2021 to highlight rising global intolerance. Nine rainbow- colored squares form a background for the traditional religious symbol of the all-seeing eye, also found on the US dollar bill, and conspiracy theories. The eye is accompanied by colored tags used in camps during World War II to mark not only Jews and homosexuals, but also the disabled and Gypsies. The photograph captures the stillness of early dawn before the world awakens. A vast lake lies motionless, reflecting the dark silhouettes of purple mountains rising beyond a deep green forest. Their ridgelines are softened by morning mist, fading into the horizon. Above them, the sky glows with a quiet fire—amber and rose tones filtering through layered clouds, with soft rays of gold stretching outward. The water mirrors this glow, trembling faintly with ripples of color from the submerged ducks.

Some years ago I saw for the first time, this piece by Raffaelo Monti, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. ‘Stunned' would be an understatement - was I really seeing through stone??!!

The young woman wears a circlet of flowers that fix a light veil to her head, from where it drapes across her face and gently swirls to her left shoulder. It is a vision of lightness and delicacy. The almond-white marble bust of the ‘Veiled Lady’, sculpted by the Italian artist, Raffaelo Monti (1818-1881) around 1860, incredibly gives us a view of a young woman clearly visible beneath folds of a light veil. But wait! How can we see through the marble veil to her face beneath? Monti, demonstrating technical mastery of his medium, brings to life a delicateness through the use of light and polish. The parts of the lady’s face that we can see have the shine of youthful skin, but Monti has left the folds of the marble veil with slight texture - less polish - to suggest the light fabric. The effect tricks our mind into thinking we are, indeed, seeing through stone.

Haha, daar verbaas ik me ook over. Het is zo'n zelfingenomen land, terwijl de politiek 249 jaar stil lijkt te hebben gestaan. Bijna 250 jaar. Wordt in het meest verdeelde tijdperk na de burgeroorlog er straks een monument neergezet door de infantielste president ooit. 'What a time to be alive'. 👀
