Fossil fertilizers are driving up food prices and fueling the climate crisis.

In Lima, Ohio, Nutrien’s plant released 192 tons of nitrous oxide in 2024, a gas 273x more potent than CO₂.

“They ruined our wells,” Bob Lane said at the meeting. “[But] my biggest concern is, I’ve got some great-grandchildren now, I look into their faces and I think, ‘What in the world are you gonna be drinking if something isn’t done about this?’”

@buckeyeenviro.bsky.social March 6 statehouse symposium drew activists across Ohio concerned about environmental & health risks from the state's lax regulation and poor waste management of gas & oil.

Environmental activists in a statewide coalition of 30 environmental organizations were among those attending the BEN event. The coalition calls for a moratorium on new and pending nominations, bids and leases to frack under Ohio state parks and public lands. (Save Ohio Parks Photo) The crowd learned truckers in unplacarded trucks transport and handle toxic and radioactive gas & oil wastewater brine for disposal in Ohio injection wells. Frack truck drivers are often recently released from prison and can have drug and alcohol problems. They are not informed of the dangerousness of their jobs, nor given adequate PPE to protect them from the radioactive waste they are exposed to. (Save Ohio Parks Photo) A few of Ohio's 88 counties have banned gas & oil brine spreading on local roads, but many counties still allow toxic and radioactive wastewater brine to be used as a deicer. The brine soaks into soil and local waterways, contaminating Ohio's water. (Save Ohio Parks Photo) Randi Pokladnik, a Ph.D. retired chemist from Harrison County, Ohio, spoke on the dangers toxic and radioactive gas and oil wastewater brine exposure can have on our environment and health.
