1/3 of kids below 5 years old died in their early years before vaccines went into widespread use in the US. America was widely enthusiastic about vaccines for smallpox, polio, whipping cough and so on when they remembered the lost babies. Then they forgot.

But that wasn’t the point. The point is when measles cases are detected they shut down schools, hospitals and other facilities. They contact trace. They treat it seriously. And measles can wipe immune memory & do lots of horrible shit. But SARS-2 is worse & likely transmits as easily or more so.
