LLMs should never be used in any application where it is important that they be accurate.

They are only appropriate for situations where it doesn't matter whether the task fails.

Disney/ABC have a responsibility to refuse to participate in corruption.

Kimmel must be reinstated. If Disney/ABC agree to this extortion then perhaps creatives + workers should consider collective action to push back. Same w/buying park + cruise tickets if they bow.

Colbert’s & Kimmel’s firings are a reminder that corporate media consolidation is a key battery for the creation of state media.

State media = authoritarianism

State media ≠ democracy

Once we scrape the Mad King & his crew out of office, let’s break up media conglomerates.

Tennessee's governor sent the state's National Guard to DC.

Apparently it wasn't about DC's crime rate: Both Memphis and Nashville have higher violent crime and property crime rates than DC does.

I assure you that I don't need to be cautioned that LLMs are not sentient. That said, LLMs have the "bear-proof garbage can" quandary, which is that the apparent intelligence of the best LLMs significantly overlaps the actual intelligence of the most willfully stupid humans.
LLMs, the technology underpinning the current AI hype wave, don't do what they're usually presented as doing. They have no innate understanding, they do not think or reason, and they have no way of knowing if a response they provide is truthful or harmful.

The sooner this so-called "AI" bubble bursts, the better.
AI is totally a bubble. I've used the generative tools in Adobe Illustrator, and use Copilot in my day job. It's a marginal improvement, but it's hardly revolutionary. AI-generated stuff only saves you effort if you don't give a shit about the output.

100% certain my work was copied, in more than one language, which means that in addition to my work, the work of translators was copied, so that's a double theft right there
A federal court ruled that ANTHROPIC illegally copied MILLIONS of books to train its AI.

All authors and publishers whose books were downloaded by Anthropic from pirate websites are subject to receiving compensation. This could involve your work.

This is ultimately my concern with "free" transit. There's always a limited pot of money for transit investments, and dropping the fare to $0 means other elements of bus service are at risk.
Kansas City was one of the first US transit systems to go fare-free. Now the fares are coming back.

The city & transit agency had a choice: Eliminate bus service or charge for trips. They chose the latter. (Low-income riders can still ride free.)

Good move. Service quality > Free fares
Kansas City saves buses from cuts with new KCATA contract. Most riders will soon pay fares
Kansas City and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority finalized a contract today, after months of fraught negotiations. The city’s bus service will continue without any cuts, but $2 fares will...

If Birmingham had the same murder rate it has year to date but the same population as NYC, they’d be up to 2200 murders this year. NYC has recorded 188 murders this year.

Americans are being conditioned to think of crime as an urban issue. Ask why.

Alabama's murder rate is far higher than New York City's.

Urban crime is not worse than rural crime. It's just more visible. In cities everything is more visible.

So be careful what you blame city leaders for.

Fantastic news and a great step towards improving democracy in the District! Thank you to all the councilmembers who supported implementation of Initiative 83 and all the activists who helped this happen. Let's keep that support up for the final budget vote!
NEWS: On an 8-4 vote, the D.C. Council has voted to fund ranked-choice voting in D.C., starting as soon as the 2026 election cycle. The follows voters' approval of Initiative 83 last November. Second and final budget vote in late-July will be final say on this.

While I have sympathy for the newsroom having to deal with fuckery from the ad side of the organization, the problem with this is that the Sun-Times' name is there in the header and it's not immediately clear where editorial ends and "advertorial" begins. Imprimatur implies responsibility.
We are looking into how this made it into print as we speak. It is not editorial content and was not created by, or approved by, the Sun-Times newsroom. We value your trust in our reporting and take this very seriously. More info will be provided soon.
