I think faith fades with social safety nets. Christianity is kept alive by huge money at the top and underserved, unrepresented, wretched poor praying to the sky because no one on earth will help them at the bottom. Look how atheistic much of Europe is.
I don't think the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to preserving Christianity. It's like living around a poorly constructed nuclear power plant. At any moment it could kill us all.
