A lot of you all don't understand the damage US courts (state and federal) are doing to the US, and still think the court system is going to save us from fascism. The court system is the most reaffirming part of the far right dismantling of US democracy, and it started decades ago. Both sides of

This is so absurd. Over the summer I sent a FOIA to Cincinnati PD for information about the cops who killed 18yo Ryan Hinton. TMK they’ve never ID’d the officers and used Marsy’s Law to deny producing names because some subset of them were “victims.”

Whole sport would be more interesting with a giant spider.
It took me 3 times watching this to realize that's an in arena camera above them and not a giant spider crawling around in the floor.

Jazz is American. End stop. Reducing it to afro Caribbean erases American history that we actually are already trying to erase. No help needed from Norway, which has a jazz scene because of America's fucked up history in the first place.
African Americans didn't give America so much culture for people to say America has no culture.
I once got in an argument with a Norwegian coworker who said that America never created any real culture. I pointed out things like jazz and he was like “but really that’s African and Caribbean,” so finally I landed on ranch dressing, and I am proud to confirm that we got that goin for us

THIS.

THIS, THIS, THIS, THISSY THIS.

Ultimately, the story here isn't Olivia Nuzzi, but the incredibly insular and dysfunctional Beltway Media cult that shapes so much of our political coverage.
If you go look at her twitter, nuzzi was (is??) supported by A LOT in the DC press corps
We need to have serious conversations about 1/ nuzzi was never, ever a “genius” or “unusually talented writer”, 2/ the DC press corps is highly problematic

Zero tolerance for doomerism. Stop lazily accepting that everything is screwed forever. Stop normalising low expectations. That’s part of the problem & it’s what the bastards want. It’s also a product of privilege. People in more desperate situations don’t have the option to just sit back & shrug.

Since becoming a parent I have not, in fact, understood the parents who say “if you were a parent you’d understand” about vaccine hesitancy. Being in charge of this fragile little miracle has me saying things like “give her all the vaccines. Turn this baby into a pincushion” to doctors

What these dopes dont get is, automakers arent going to retool plants to make less efficient cars and consumers want vehicles that get good gas mileage. This is all performative bs
Sean Duffy on slashing fuel economy standards: "This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s station wagon. Maybe a little wood paneling on the side. We can bring back choice to consumers."

Yeah I don't know how to fully express that I feel like my soul is basically damaged by the way I feel about the regime & its agents at this point.

I don't know that I've ever really felt this level of visceral moral CONTEMPT for other humans. It veers into cold hate at times in ways I worry about.
y'know, i never hated a person until i was in my late 40's. ask anyone who knows me, i'm a squish. it still doesn't come naturally to me, but holy hell i *hate* every single person involved in making this DHS/ICE reign of terror possible.
It's a campaign of terror.

Her terror (and the terror of entire communities, forced into hiding) is not incidental.

It is a product they are manufacturing, a key part of the spectacle for their intended audience.

Which is the terrorized, but also the terror consumers.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed disastrous cuts to our city's libraries while setting aside $5M for a ShotSpotter replacement. As library associate Sara Heymann told me, “Libraries embody everything we need to fight back against fascism.” My piece on what’s at stake and how to fight back:
You Can’t Fight Fascism While Defunding Libraries

Alderpersons just advanced a bill out of committee that could shutdown all THC and CBD in Chicago. Seems as strict as shutting down CBD from dog treats even, by language anyway. Would remove Choom, Plift, Toke, and other low dose, responsible producers from the market.

What's happening with the Chicago Public Libraries right now is terrible. The proposed budget of the city would CUT 89 CPL positions. Importantly, 78 positions were lost LAST year. That would be 167 positions in 2 YEARS while COPS KEEP GETTING MORE MONEY. ENOUGH. SAY NO.

Democrats will eventually wake up and realize a big factor in this rollercoaster is the filibuster. It tilts an already tilted playing field in the GOP’s favor, because republicans really have no interest in passing legislation anyway. But voters blame dems when they can’t make things happen.
This has been my whole freaking life. Every time Republicans take power people are like goddamit this is awful, they get voted out, then two years later people are like hmmm Republicans again
Cosmically funny that, the American public has had less than a year of uncut republican governance, and they’ve decided that they absolutely hate this shit, spit it out

There was a specific problem with pandemic-era welfare fraud associated with some Somalis, which the state government is investigating using the criminal justice system and by eliminating points of weakness. The Trump administration is using it as an opportunity to target an entire community.
Jacob Frey: "We are here to respond to credible reports relaying that there are as many as 100 federal agents that will be deployed to the Twin Cities with a specific focus on targeting our Somali community. To our Somali community -- we love you and we stand with you. That commitment is rock solid"
