- so yes I’m very aware that there are outliers in indie press publishing where a sale by trad terms could be described - stripped of context - as good or very good. Those are very rare indeed.
3. If you’re not a catch sales-wise, get cunning & reposition, forward facing.
4. Build relationships!

1. Six weeks ago I approached 7 agents. So far from that, three requests for fulls, of which one resulted in an offer, 1 a rejection and 1 still waiting. Ooooh.
2. I’m the author of the books and stacks of other shorter pieces, all with small publishers - no big sales. A word on sales just in case

Where am I a few weeks after starting current manoeuvres? 2 passes, 1 after meeting & seeing text, 1 form rejection, 1 offer +interest in 2 books, not just the 1 I was querying with, I full and now 1 full + info on other book, 3 partials with updates. Simultaneously placed a novella with an indie

Book news. This is going to be out in the spring with a brilliant indie. Just heard and details follow. It’s weird, kinky, sexy, supernatural; it’s about grief, loss and magical thinking, ambivalent motherhood & intergenerational trauma. London, Cambridge, Salisbury, Paris, Beauvais…

More news on the foundation when I can!
bookwormvaught.bsky.social
In November the 2nd & final #curae anthology is published by @renardpress.com with all profits, as in 2023, to @carerstrust.bsky.social and Carers UK. Beyond? I’m establishing the Curae Foundation to offer a substantial scholarship for online creative writing study or research for an unpaid carer!

So you’re going to have at least three book launches with me in 2026 and, because of my commitment to access, they will all be online instead of or in addition to bookshop events.
I AM at Folkestone lit next month. My event is sold out. Coming? Say hello here!

Sometimes you stumble upon something. Someone shared its latest post on friendship as one of the best things they’d read. Honestly read it along - it’s just brilliant, insightful, humane and really funny too theshadowedarchive.substack.com/p/an-existen...

❤️I’d not noted the OT. Fab. It’s great that home invigilation is more known about now. My main idea is that I find the phrasing of the questions sharper and clearer in IGCSE & that’s a boon with chronic illness, when you’re navigating impact on processing and energy
bookwormvaught.bsky.social
They’re not considered part of a standardised set of qualifications. However, I like the IGCSE both language and literature and I actually think the questions are better in lit - the phrasing is sharper, and that this is a significant point, especially for some SEND students. Whole other story.

I don’t know if you’re also a teacher but if not and you ever need pointers on that - alternative arrangements - please say x

Same. However they CAN sit it independently
bookwormvaught.bsky.social
Just to reiterate. Yes this is good but my point is absolutely that IGCSEs are NOT licensed for state schools and funding was entirely withdrawn for the Cambridge exam board - which this is about - in 2019. IGCSEs are not funded by govt OR (if you’re interested) included in league tables. Why?

I prefer the IGCSE to GCSE in lit and lang. I teach one version of IGCSE to students outside the mainstream, but its province in the UK is private schools. Do you see how this move, then, is truly 2 tier? It’s the right move I think. Now make it the same for GCSE
Cambridge to make all IGCSE English literature exams open book
Students already had the possibility of consulting drama texts in the exam but, in future, all Cambridge IGCSE literature in English papers will be open book, including prose

Yes I agree BUT while IGCSE is used internationally, in the UK it’s licensed for private education and as an option for those outside mainstream with access to an exam centre for the relevant board.
bookwormvaught.bsky.social
And yes I have been a bit annoyed actually at book/writer folk who have no experience of teaching at this stage, never mind examining, getting high profile pieces on dearth of stuff at GCSE.
bookwormvaught.bsky.social
BTW: I have told publishing & book folk my views on how we need to link lack of reading to KS4 literature approach - it’s the missed element & we can help overnight by giving year 10 & 11 their books. I know you lot won’t listen until I’m queen/emperor etc or have a title like FRSL as well as my Dr😂

Double yes please then. Closed book does not mean they’re more engaged with the text. I’ve always said that in my 348 years of various teaching roles. And yes: the government killed off creative writing as a separate exam subject & current approach to lit GCSE definitely doesn’t foster love of books
