And here we are, the last month of 2025! December is usually light on review books, and this year is no exception. Technically, I only have two December releases on my plate, but I'm adding Tea & Alchemy because I meant to read it last month but couldn't get to it. I've broken this month's reading into three categories: December releases, Catch-up review books, and "Get ahead" January releases.

Even though I didn't participate as much as usual, I'm glad to have joined in #scifimonth2025! I only read one science fiction book this month, but it was a good one!

We're nearing the end of SciFi Month—how did November fly by so fast?? So it's time to share my favorite science fiction books of the year so far. To be honest, I have not read a lot of SF this year, so this list includes some four star rated books (unusual for my Best Of lists). But I enjoyed all of these and recommend them!

The nitty-gritty: Social media, cancel culture and a ghostly stalker merge in this interesting but uneven thriller. “Some secrets don’t live on the tongue, but the back of the throat, where they have to be swallowed again and again, a hundred times a day.” You Watched In Silence is a queer mystery/thriller with just a touch of the paranormal, and perhaps that’s one reason it didn’t work as well as I’d hoped.

There's a massive rain storm right now in Southern California, and it's continuing through this coming week. The nitty-gritty: A mysterious, secluded house traps a group of teens in this atmospheric, if somewhat uneven, YA horror story.  The Devouring Light had some very creepy and disturbing scenes, and in that respect it succeeded. However, it also fell into some well tread YA tropes, and I didn’t care much for the characters, so overall this was a mixed bag for me.

The nitty-gritty: Daniel Church takes on cosmic horror in this oppressive, dread-inducing tale full of eerie imagery and tension, perfect for horror fans looking for a unique story. The Sound of the Dark was not what I expected, and I’m happy to say that’s a good thing. Daniel Church has written a dark story about a podcaster who stumbles upon a dangerous set of cassette tapes while researching her latest project, only to find herself with a weird, terrifying infection.
