I like what Ben Johnson and Ryan Poles have put together for the offense in 2025…

Except they missed out on RB in the draft, and I’m not sure if Swift + Johnson are enough to fuel a run-heavy, play-action system.

That’s a group of pass catchers to scheme with
Bears pass catchers:

WR DJ Moore
WR Rome Odunze
WR Luther Burden III
TE Colston Loveland
TE Cole Kmet

Chicago is going to major the tish out of 12 personnel in 2025. I can’t wait to see which RB is selected to tote the rock 20 times a game.
April 25, 2025 at 1:56 AM
If Hampton falls or Henderson is the target for Johnson… does Poles trade into the 1st?

NFL teams like to trade up or back when they have two nearly adjacent picks.

Bears senior director of player personnel Jeff King on Colston Loveland: "I love the versatility. ... The ability to play in 12 (personnel) but be able to separate in the passing game. ... The versatility, the matchup issues you can cause and complement Cole (Kmet)."

Ben Johnson likes his 12 personnel sets - Loveland will see the field a decent amount.

Kmet will be tasked with the in-line duties as he has been.

Loveland has a more diverse route tree than Warren. Just a flavor thing. Johnson got his offensive weapon of choice (Jeanty aside).
The first tight end is off the board, but not the one everyone expected: The Bears pick Michigan TE Colston Loveland at 10th overall.

A complement to Cole Kmet.

Jeanty noooooo
April 25, 2025 at 12:55 AM
Noted for next draft cycle - Gladstone likes playing deceptive games.
Travis Hunter to Jamie Erdahl: He had zero conversations with the Jaguars since the Combine.
April 25, 2025 at 12:29 AM
Tremendous athlete and talent.

Also a tremendous puzzle for the coaches to figure out.

Highest upside. Odd type of risk - Hunter is an NFL player, but development can be rocky if mismanaged.
Jaguars select WR/CB Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick.

Hunter is the highest-drafted WR since Calvin Johnson and the highest-drafted CB in the common-draft era.

Huge cost to move up from 5 to 2. Blockbuster.
The Browns and Jaguars trade:

Browns receive: 5th overall pick (1st round), 36th overall pick (2nd round), 126th overall pick (4th round) and 2026 1st round pick

Jaguars receive: 2nd overall pick (1st round), 104th overall pick (4th round), 200th overall pick (6th round)
April 25, 2025 at 12:23 AM
It would have to be for TE? Warren or Loveland?
Russini: Broncos making aggressive push to trade into top 10.
April 25, 2025 at 12:06 AM
This sounds like Danny Dimes all over again
One recurring item in the NFL Draft buzz today is the New York Giants considering QB Jaxson Dart with the third overall pick 👀

Per Josina Anderson, Breece Hall is, in fact, available. Life comes at you fast. Seems like just last year he was playing his slam-dunk rookie year.

Schefter said everyone wants to trade down, nobody wants to trade up.

Poles says it’s going to be a wild draft.

I think the Bears already have a deal in place to trade up. Just waiting to ensure the guy is still there.
April 24, 2025 at 1:56 PM
Cleveland are rumored to be shopping 1.02.

Chicago are rumored to be inquiring about moving up.

The Jimmy Johnson and Rich Hill charts say 1.10 + 2.39 aren’t close to the value of 1.02.

A trade would likely include 1.10 and CHI’s 2026 1st (plus).

Feels steep for Carter or Hunter.

Welcome to draft day!

Savor it. As tiring as the constant projecting and prognosticating can feel, this is what it’s all been about. I’m ready for the randomness.

Short term speculation to get rich quick on stocks “when they’re low” keeps the boat above water for now like bailing water, but the long term problem is the massive hole in the hull.

A little over 24 hours to go until the Draft and this is clear: There is less consensus on players this year than any year I can remember.

There are probably 50 players who could go in the first round’s final 12 spots. There will be top players for some who slide to the 20s.
April 23, 2025 at 9:15 PM
Who could they be moving up for?

“Bears are in love with Ashton Jeanty”

The Lions traded up ~20 picks to draft Jameson Williams.

Or maybe it’s another offensive weapon?
April 23, 2025 at 8:01 PM
The Saints are in such a dire spot for the 2025 season between the squeezed cap space, starting QB with a shoulder injury, major hits on the OL, and other team needs. Lotta work for first year HC Kellen Moore.
Saints GM Mickey Loomis announced that the team is picking up the fifth-year option on WR Chris Olave but declining it on OT Trevor Penning, who is now in the contract year.

Great video.

TLDW:

NFL team know trading back and having higher quantities of draft picks is optimal.

But GMs and coaching staffs have pressure to win quickly, and can’t afford to “tank” now for later.

Also, isolating talent for prospect analysis is harder for football than most sports.
If you want to understand the state of the art in the NFL regarding positional surplus, the trade market, and why so many teams still mess up, take 20 minutes of your time and watch this (guest appearances from Kevin Cole and @seanfromseabeck.bsky.social).
