Two very young cygnets, probably only a few weeks old, glide across calm blue water, their soft beige down still completely fluffy rather than sleek like older juveniles. Their tiny grey legs and translucent feet paddle just below the surface, leaving gentle V‑shaped ripples behind them as they keep close together, giving the scene a tender, quietly curious mood.

Candles entered Christmas traditions from pre-Christian pagan solstice rituals in ancient Europe, where flames symbolized the sun’s return, warded off darkness and evil, and celebrated renewal during the darkest time of year. Christians adapted these practices in the Middle Ages, associating large candles with the Star of Bethlehem and Jesus as the “Light of the World,” while German Lutherans placed them on Christmas trees from at least the 16th century. The Advent wreath originated in 1839 when Lutheran pastor Johann Hinrich Wichern crafted one at a Hamburg orphanage using a cartwheel with 24 small candles for weekdays and four large ones for Sundays to help children anticipate Christmas. It simplified to four candles—one lit each Advent Sunday representing hope, peace, joy, and love—and spread among German Protestants by the early 20th century, with Catholics adopting it from 1925 in Cologne and wider use after World War II. Regional customs enhanced the symbolism, such as Irish Catholics lighting window candles during penal times to guide Mary, Joseph, and Jesus or signal safe Mass, a practice carried to America, and Polish or Greek Orthodox burning candles on Christmas Eve for enlightenment. Overall, Advent wreaths gained popularity in German homes and churches in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, reaching North America via Lutheran immigrants in the 1930s to become a global emblem of anticipation.

After today’s photograph description, l have included a poem l wrote about this scene. Our picture shows a wide field of ripened grain, likely barley or wheat, stretching across the entire scene taken just down the road from where l live in rural Ireland. The stalks are tall and heavy, their heads bowed and tangled, colored in warm shades of gold, bronze, and deep amber. A narrow path runs straight through the center of the field, cutting a dark channel between the dense crops and drawing the eye toward the distant horizon. In the far background, low farm buildings sit small and quiet against the skyline. Above them, the sky dominates nearly half of the image. Thick, dark storm clouds roll overhead in layered shades of charcoal, grey, and steel blue. Lighter patches of sky glow faintly through breaks in the cloud cover, with a late afternoon approaching storm looming. The overall mood is dramatic and moody, the warmth and richness of the grain contrast strongly with the heavy, threatening sky. There is a sense of wind moving through the field, as if the grain is whispering beneath the coming rain and finally we have a simple white border frame to our picture. And now today’s poem… I call it… “Before the Rain” Golden heads in quiet prayer, Bowed beneath a darkening sky, The earth holds its patient breath As storm-born shadows wander by. A narrow path through whispering grain Leads where distant rooftops lie, Between the warmth of growing life And thunder’s gathering reply.
