As someone who lives in rural MB, but grew up in Winnipeg (small and not very industrial), it has become increasingly obvious to me how dirty the city's air is. You can seen the brownish cloud hanging over it. Slashing taxes, killing healthcare, to enrich oiligarchs is killing us.

Essential research shows that particulate pollution—generated from motor fuels exhaust, tire wear, wildfires, factories, etc—is associated with dementia. More evidence that it is in the interest of public health to reduce pollution. (Gift link)

If you want expensive power a decade from now (that never arrives on budget), by all means choose nuclear. But if you want cheap power as soon as next year, choose wind, solar and storage. The economics are straightforward. #EnergyTransition

Watching Carney's APEC CEO Summit talking about how Canada would vastly increase (more than doubling) our LNG exports by 2040 was distressing.

The costs of fossil fuel damage to climate and health are increasing. Ignoring that is bad economics.

Expanding LNG will increase prices and pollution. Proponents flog the stale idea that fossil gas can replace coal to generate electricity, but that no longer holds up when renewables are a far cheaper option. davidsuzuki.org/story/expand...

A bonehead move by our govt. BC has got it right, passing legislation to limit the waste of valuable clean energy on environmentally disastrous data centres. We will need our limited hydro capacity to electrify the economy, not to subsidize Amazon, Meta and X. #MbPoli

We can find suitable land with sunlight, water, and nutrients to grow plants, wait years to harvest the biomass and burn it for energy, hope to capture the CO₂ with carbon capture and storage technology, and find a suitable spot to bury the CO₂ permanently.

OR we can use solar panels.
I wonder how long it will take before they start asking for bailouts, again, because they missed a global trend and kept building big gas guzzlers.

We are likely facing growing mental health problems due to property loss, evacuations, rising food costs, and general existential crises too. Saying we can't afford to clean up our act is indefensible.

Here's something that's not talked about enough

The air pollution from burning fossil fuels kills an estimated 10 million people a year

1 in 6 deaths is caused by fossil fuels

I think I understand the many reasons why people believe it's not worth it to phase out fossil fuels, but I also feel exhausted and vaguely insane living my life knowing that while the world seems normal on the surface, the fossil-fuel economy is, right now, breaking the world forever.

📢 Behind Europe’s fossil gas addiction communities across the Atlantic are paying the price. The US is already the EU’s biggest LNG supplier – and imports are set to triple under the new US-EU trade deal. At what cost?

1/3 Last week at PROC, profs lined up to support the "1 candidate/OA" proposal. What caught our attention was that they are not proposing 1 candidate/per OA/per riding. To get a better grasp on why they are so interested in this change we took a look at the 2025 election returns...
I'd argue there is no "economic advantage" in a) contributing to planet destroying emissions, b) giving away billions in subsidies to a planet-destroying product, and c) investing in selling an end-of-life product.

There is no economy without a sustainable environment.
