Tomorrow, SCOTUS will hear arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, a major threat to (what remains of) the 1965 Voting Rights Act. But this isn't the first time the VRA has faced dire threats; in 2013 and 2021, SCOTUS weakened other provisions. We can learn from those why Callais could be so dangerous 🧵

We often say that the VRA had two hearts: The shield in Section 5 / preclearance, and the sword to strike down bad policies in Sec 2. In 2013, the Court broke the shield. In 2021, they bent the sword. Tomorrow's case could radically undermine what remains.

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.

The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!

Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.

FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

Trump: "I don't think there's anything that's gonna get me in heaven. I think I'm not maybe heaven bound. I may be in heaven right now as we fly on Air Force One. I'm not sure I'm gonna be able to make heaven."

Other fav Lizzie Bordon fact: not having a lot of friends/family after the trial, she left $30k in her will to the “Animal Rescue League of Fall River, Massachusetts, which benefits from her first—and final—bequest to this day” after wisely investing it. 🗃️

The Supreme Court is so illegitimate that cases are often about fictional matters with plaintiffs who have been harmed in no way, now to the point where they are not aware that they are plaintiffs in a Supreme Court case.

Some people are Summer babies.

Give me cool nights and fires and smoked Gouda. Give me roasted peppers and warm sourdough. Give me maple in everything. Even my favorite cocktails are Fall and Winter oriented. Irish coffees and hot buttered rums.

I worship this time of year.

The tomatoes are sun dried from the Summer and ready to be eaten. In fact most of those Summer fruits are now deliciously dried and thrown in everything. Fall is nuts and fruits, oats and roasted veggies. Spices. So many spices. This time of year is a romance.
