Tried to measure my pulse to no avail. My pulse has ceased to exist.

Perhaps I've turned into a vampire at some point in the past decade.

6-7" of snow so far, with at least another couple hours of snowfall to go.

All classes at both the colleges I work for are virtual tomorrow.

High tomorrow, 4F.

The Iceman Cometh...

It is currently 0 degrees here, with a wind chill of -18F (in other words, that's what it feels like if you actually step outside).

Keep warm and safe, folks.

Aliens arrive & invite the 100 most powerful humans to a close-up look at their ship & technology

Day 2: The 100 "most powerful" (DJT, Putin, Xi, etc) smugly accept their invitations

Day 3: The ship's, gone along w/ the most powerful.

Everyone left on Earth gets a text saying "You're welcome."

I was just reading a reddit post where the vast majority [of an admittedly small number] of people commenting said they didn't get people who went to bed w/o showering first.

I mean...sometimes, sure. But how many of you shower every night before bedtime? Even if you've just been home all day?

Working my way through the Rolling Stone list of 100 greatest heavy metal songs, metal being one of the few genres I continue not to "get."

Haven't found a lot of faves yet, but I'm finally learning the lyrics to 55 year old hit songs.

In the early 90s, I followed NBA basketball regularly, saw a lot of games, met some players, etc.

Apparently, the 90s were a long time ago, since I just learned 5 minutes ago that there exists an NBA team called the New Orleans Pelicans who have been around - with the name Pelicans - since 2013!

My primary phone (but not my old backup one) is "emergency calls only" and Verizon apparently has no timeline for how long it'll take to fix this massive outage.

Power's back...I'm saved. :)
9F windchill right now, and we just lost our power.

Also, I'm trapped in a recliner. :)

63 degrees the other day. Today, I up to 14F, gusts of 40 mph, and snow flurries.

However, I did get out of the house to have my car inspected (there's a very expensive laundry list of "recommended" things") and get the oil changed, the tires rotated, the antifreeze checked & the fluids topped up.

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

I'll bet it's also related in part to the age of the instructor. I've taught for over 30 years (starting in my mid-30s) and never had a student formally complain about a grade. I even had a slacker boy thank me for a D once!
Experimental evidence that students are more likely to contest grades when they are delivered by an evaluator with a female-sounding name.

"These findings suggest that women in evaluative positions face disproportionate resistance when delivering negative assessments."

So..."Freedom of Speech" is now defined as meaning you can't critique America, capitalism, Christianity, law/immigration enforcement, or someone's notion of "traditional" views.

This is some Orwellian 1984 Big Brother shit.
Our new golden age of free speech, where opposition to immigration enforcement can trigger a federal investigation

Watching Del Toro's Frankenstein and...not loving it.

It's beautiful, but I suspect I'm too familiar with Shelley's novel to fully appreciate this film. If this was an entirely original story, it might work better for me.

I'm back on my "wtf, weather?" thing.

The other day, it was -9F. I mean, actual -9F.

The forecast for Xmas day is currently 64F

In what will only be truly appreciated by people who teach Intro to Comp on a regular basis:

The final persuasive essay drafts are in. ALL my students submitted work. ALL their papers have real theses. ALL their Works Cited pages are formatted correctly. NOBODY seems to have plagiarized / used AI.

I'm so sad about the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer, and that they lost their lives in what sounds like a double homicide committed by their son Nick makes it even more horrible.

May their memories be a blessing. :(
