G’day! I’m Benjamin Alldridge, a photo taker person from Tasmania.

I recently won the Landscape category at the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year for 2024, although astrophotography is my bread and butter.

Say g’day 😊

There is a mated pair that often visit and forage, occasionally they'll hop onto the feeders too. Occasionally they'll jump on as a pair, though usually they take turns to swing off of my archway.

Ever bumped into a marsupial after dark? Chances are you wouldn’t have if you could see different colours.

@bennjordan.bsky.social Benn – first, I acknowledge the superiority your spelling. Second, ever been to Australia, specifically Tasmania? I’m documenting wild spaces using multispectral imaging techniques down here, I think it’d be a nice pairing for your recording trickery…

After more than 12 months, I can finally release this body of work and something totally new to science; the very first quoll fluorescence in the wild. Have a read: fluroscape.com/2025/a-quoll...

Matt is one of the best photographers in Australia, and a hell of a nice guy too. Definitely consider adding him to your feeds.
Taken on a recent trip in #KranjskaGora in #Slovenia. Slemenova Špica was probably my favorite hike of the trip. After climbing up the initial steep hill in deep fog this scene revealed itself as a reward. Sometimes you make a photograph and other times #nature gives it to you!

Hey #Astrophotography peeps! Have you ever or ever thought about using your smartphone to do what you do?

Well, nearly 55,000 others have… we are now by far the largest smartphone astrophotography community on the planet. Come check it out: www.facebook.com/share/g/15zU...

No matter what tree you find yourself gathering around, I hope it’s surrounded by the warming presence of love and joy.

Have a lovely holiday season, friends!

“Have friends send random photos of your photos on billboards in other states” wasn’t really how I expected to be ending ‘24’s bingo card.

Rachel is one of my good mates, and one of the best astrophotographers on the planet. All round good bloke and supermum to boot, even if she is from the bad side of the Tasman…
I’m lucky enough to live at the foot of the NZ’s Southern Alps, where there is a network of around 100 huts and bivs.
Pictured is Bluff Hut which is one of the darkest places on the planet. So dark that I was able to capture not only the zodiacal light, but the Gegenschein!

Well that’s a hell of a review!
What’s the word for when someone is round eyed, slack jawed, open mouthed, maybe a bit of drool, and 60 seconds have passed? 🧐

Oh, yes. Eyegasm. Feel like lighting up a ciggy now.

(One of the most incredible pix I’ve seen. Did you take that, Ben?! Love it. Thank you for sharing)

While most of my ‘serious’ imaging is done on my full size cameras, I do a tremendous amount on my #iphone.

Let’s see your phone shots.

I cannot overstate how much of a game-changer DxO PureRAW is for low light photography. If I can push a file from my 5D Mark IV ~3 stops at ISO 12,800 and get this result, fair to say it works.

I’m curious to see what practical effects photographers have been able to achieve in-camera. This is the combination of 3 shots taken back in 2018.

More fish photos to brighten up Blue Sky. Remember the original fish Twitter games we used to play? Like #EpithetEtymology, #GuessThatFish, and #WrasseWednesday? I’m bringing them all back!

I don’t quite yet have the same reach on here as I did on Twitter, so I’m going to start a new fish game called #EtymologyEpithet, where I explain the etymology (the meaning behind a name) for all of the fishes I’ve described, starting with Cirrhilabrus isosceles, the Pintail Fairywrasse.

If you give a damn about pretty fish, go follow Kai.
Hi everyone. I felt really dejected for a long time about the state of science communication on Twitter, and was reluctant to give things a try on yet another new platform. I’m so touched by the support everyone has shown so let’s give this one last go, as KaiTheFishGuy on Blue Sky!

I’ve been away all week working so been largely absent from the internet, but I have also been editing in the background too.

This is from Tasmania’s stunning Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area on my way home from camping back in June.

BlueSky? More like green, pink, and purple sky. Starting fresh with a recent memorable moment under the Aurora Australis down here in Tasmania. Looking forward to sharing more on here!
