He spends hours with them, crying in their arms and lamenting leaving them (when he turned of age he ran away, wanting to feel independent but unaware of what that meant), in tears about how he's been alone for so, so long... the power of the star sapphire is his greatest weakness, as his heart has been bleeding for centuries. after spending hours in their arms, his mother encourages him to break free from the illusion, and tells him a truth he's long since forgotten; that he is, and always will be, loved. them having been dead for thousands of years changes nothing; he's always in their thoughts, and they've always been in his heart. im tearing up over my boy right now.
