What with listening to @gregjenner.bsky.social host a podcast about run up to British Civil Wars and @battleroyale.bsky.social doing Louis XIII, I'm basically reliving my History A Level about 20 years later. I keep remembering things I made notes about just as someone says key phrases.
We've already got an Edgar the Peaceable and it's Louis IX 😅
Sorry to disappoint. 😭 I have a feeling we might come to regret this decision. But hopefully the fact we covered him at all will help redeem him! This period is so overlooked in general.
He does! You know he's up to no good 😉
No idea who that is and Google won't tell me
Also I was trying to make a joke about how the full-figured "Rubenesque" beauty standards aligns roughly with the rise of opera (which is stereotyped as having "fat ladies" as primadonnas). Maybe a poorly worded joke on my part, but I was not trying to imply causality there.
Opera, ballet and theatre in general are things that gradually evolve from the Middle Ages and were not invented under Louis XIV. I'm not a music buff but I gather the word "opera" had a different meaning (lit. "work" in Italian) so it could honestly mean anything. But it's there in the 1500s.
It was fleetingly mentioned in the sources I read but here's an article that mentions her and Henry IV patronising Giulio Caccini and Jacopo Peri. Obviously these are Italian not French composers, and it would not have been opera as we recognise it. indianapublicmedia.org/harmonia/cen....

It’s now time to review the life and deeds of the “mad king” himself, Charles VI. In this episode, we talk about what the king was like before his mental illness took over, and what the darkest period of the Hundred Years’ War was like from his tragic perspective.

Thanks for the shout-out! Glad you're enjoying it.
Veronica from Passed podcast joins us to talk Berry and Bourbon. Together, they're the "nice" uncles of Charles VI, and a great idea for a cocktail!
