Wat je dus moet doen is collectief de kosten verhogen als 1 lidstaat economisch wordt gepakt. Dat kan al, bijvoorbeeld met het anti coercion instrument. Daarmee wordt bijv Amerikaanse partijen voor europese publieke aanbestedingen uitgesloten. Maar daar is dus politieke wil voor nodig

Omdat lidstaten wel samen een vuist willen maken, maar wanneer Trump bijv een willekeurig product als cognac of Spaans rundvlees zou voorzien van forse tarieven, dan is de europese eenheid plots ver te zoeken. Andere lidstaten vrezen escalatie. Weer anderen verminderde veiligheidsgaranties.

Ja ik zag het, en ik ben ook niet onder de indruk van wat de Trump-regering op de mat legt. Zoveel mensen ontslagen bi Trade, en dan zoveel nieuwe handelsdeals: het is bijna onmogelijk om dat te doen zonder kundige ambtenaren. Basistarief zijn beiden het echter over eens en dat is wat steekt.

Nieuwe handelsakkoorden zijn noodzakelijk nu de VS en China proberen Europa af te knijpen. Maar in Brussel gaat het sluiten van die akkoorden tergend (!) langzaam. Koppel daarom onderhandelingen over handel los van andere zaken; ontkoppel de dominee en de koopman. Opinie in @fd.nl
