Topics that ranked highly in survey responses but not in assignment choices were possibly due to:

* Difficulty finding relevant datasets, or
* How we categorized students' assignment submissions (see the paper for details)
The figure below shows survey responses. Interest in environment, education, health, econ. development, and community engagement were consistent in survey responses s well as choices made by students in open-ended data-centric assignments (i.e., through choice of dataset and analysis focus)
New paper appearing at Koli Calling:

Paper: ayaankazerouni.org/papers/2025/...

Blog: ayaankazerouni.org/blog/what-to...

From surveys at 6 institutions, interviews at 2, and choices in open ended assignments at 1, we learned about the topics that students found interesting in computing assignments

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

I'm looking for experienced developers to write code playbacks for my platform. If you enjoy explaining your code and teaching others, code playbacks are a great way to share knowledge and build your reputation in the dev community.

All @acm.org publications will be 100% Open Access as of January 2026. When we announced this at POPL and CHI this year, conference participants spontaneously erupted in applause. The CS community is excited about ACM's move to OA!
Trying to find something I should have saved when I first saw it: a "blog post" that enumerated a teacher's notes to self about teaching, ranging from minutiae of in-class interactions to lessons learned about course design.

If anyone has seen something similar I'd appreciate a pointer. Thanks!
There were other positive impacts of SRC additions that were felt across all six campuses. For more details see the paper. This abridged write-up also describes the work in the context of the larger effort that was funded by the NSF in 2022.

On the other hand, the campuses WITHOUT competitive CS enrollment policies saw significant increases in sense of belonging in CS, both between control and treatment terms and within treatment terms.
At the campuses WITH competitive CS enrollment policies—where students already at the University need to jump through further hoops to major in CS—we did NOT see any significant changes in sense of belonging in CS. These students' sense of belonging appeared to be relatively stable.

A reminder that @benshapi.ro and I run CERAMICS: "Computing Education Research Advancing Methods for Curricula and Systems". It's for people trying to enter/succeed in CS Ed research and looking for help on how to do so. See FAQ linked below. Next deadline June 1:

In 2020, we mapped out the danger zones that will close in on Americans over the next 30 years — combining climate data with wildfire projections by US Forest Service researchers.

See what changes are in store for your county.

Yep. Good thing a teacher of ancient history is poking at it!
Great! Be warned though, it’s a pretty limited set of events.
Thanks! Feel free to comment or suggest changes

I'm teaching data visualisation for the first time in the Spring quarter, and stuff like this is extremely helpful. So just wanted to say thanks!

I’ve been keeping one eye on your updates about the book and your recent post nudged me to buy it on Thursday. So not the weekend, but maybe that was part of it for others as well. (I do plan to use portions in my classes once it’s stable, but have not listed it anywhere just yet.)
