Smith replies that taxes should be increased in the upper tax brackets, with additional tax brackets to ensure the wealthy contribute fairly. "This would help redistribute wealth and fund essential public services."

Smith says maybe the conversation should turn to abolishing the Senate, and the room loudly cheers in response. She says we don't have provincial senates anymore and "maybe it's the premiers who are supposed to be the counter balance on the federal government, not the Senate"

Distributed decisionmaking is a key principle of pluralism.

The notion that we avoid consolidating power in the hands of one person has been at the core of our constitutional order for centuries.

To move us away from absolute monarchies.

Populists like Smith are openly ignoring those norms.
