Graham Greene has died.
A Canadian acting icon, he earned an Oscar nomination for his role as Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves. He also won a Grammy, Gemini and Canadian Screen Award, along with the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. He also earned a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.

Far right folks are fuming over the UCP's book ban. Not over the party's abandonment of libertarian principles. But over the Edmonton Public School Board's choice to follow the new law.

If you have friends in those circles, just ask: Which of the 200 EPSB books should stay on shelves?

"If they need us to hold their hand through the process to identify what kind of materials are appropriate … so we can be super clear about what it is we're trying to do," Smith said.

Ok, but only if it stops at hand holding, and the pair are opposite sex.

2012 Danielle Smith must be so conflicted.

On one hand, she's days away from realizing her dream of locking out all public school teachers in the province.

On the other, she's having to fight to keep Atlas Shrugged on high school library shelves after people took her book ban literally.

Today, we honoured the life and legacy of Jack Layton. 🧡

Jack believed that hope could triumph over fear, that everyone deserves a seat at the table.

Standing at his statue, I felt his spirit and call to action more clearly than ever.

We won’t let them tell us it can’t be done.

Incredible conversations today at The Walrus about the power of storytelling and the future of Canadian media. As the NDP Heritage critic and a Canadian, I’m grateful for the work they do to make sure our stories reflect all of us. 🇨🇦

Congratulations to Air Canada flight attendants. You stood your ground, defended your rights, and won.

Air Canada saw workers weren’t backing down, so they had to come back to the table.

This tentative deal happened where it was always going to happen - at the bargaining table.
Canola details from NFU🙌🏽
"Canada’s canola sector has a high degree of vertical integration making it unclear whether compensation for farmers affected by tariffs will remain in farmers hands or simply flow through to the vertically integrated seed/chemical companies..."

The UCP's next game is particularly cruel...

The plan is to transition all AISH recipients to their new "But you can work a little" program and only after everyone is transitioned can those unable to work re-apply for AISH.

The consequence of the failed talks is devastating, as it leaves no clear path for nations to collectively address the mountains of plastic that are filling landfills, clogging oceans and showing up in chunks on beaches and other public places.
World fails to come up with treaty to deal with plastics pollution
Negotiations to reach a treaty to deal with the growing issue of plastics pollution around the world fell apart on Friday.

The premier could do this tomorrow. She doesn't need a panel. She doesn't need her own tax collection agency.

She would (likely) need to call a referendum or campaign on it in the next provincial election.

So why doesn't she? 🤔
Smith replies that taxes should be increased in the upper tax brackets, with additional tax brackets to ensure the wealthy contribute fairly. "This would help redistribute wealth and fund essential public services."

Wasn't me, but I share the sentiment.
Jared from the audience asks why we're talking about separatist ideas during an active trade war with the US. He says he knows the government is busy bullying trans kids, and McAllister mutters "turn the mic off." They move on to the next question.

I mean we're rehashing the Fair Deal panel and O'Brien Commission, so why not redo Harper's Senate abolition gambit while we're at it?

If the premier and her staff want to muse about this stuff without doing any homework, they should go back to running a podcast and stop wasting our time and $.
Smith says maybe the conversation should turn to abolishing the Senate, and the room loudly cheers in response. She says we don't have provincial senates anymore and "maybe it's the premiers who are supposed to be the counter balance on the federal government, not the Senate"

"Distributed decision-making"... How do we live it?
Clearly The UCP government does not know how or want to know how.
Distributed decisionmaking is a key principle of pluralism.

The notion that we avoid consolidating power in the hands of one person has been at the core of our constitutional order for centuries.

To move us away from absolute monarchies.

Populists like Smith are openly ignoring those norms.
Prime minister. Judge. Chief Electoral Officer. Mayor. Your child's doctor. And now city planner.

There's no end to the jobs Danielle Smith wants to do.

If the Minister of Justice is counseling the Chief Electoral Officer to disregard the law, it makes you wonder what kind of advice he's offering the premier and the rest of government.

Predictably, the move is sowing further distrust in the democratic system, including elections and courts.
Sorry I missed the in-person gathering in Calgary. I will be doing my part from Ottawa/Chelsea for the next year🍊🧡
I’m so grateful for our NDP family in Calgary. Just incredible folks who put their heart and soul into our collective, progressive work.

We met to talk about the future of our party, about getting ready for the next election, and how we can all work together as we rebuild. 🧡💪

The Alberta Court’s ruling that the UCP cannot restrict the freedoms of parents, children and medical professionals under Bill 26 is the kind of late Friday afternoon news that I prefer!

🙌❤️🌈
I am pleased to hear the news that the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta has ruled to block Danielle Smith and her UCP government’s attempts to restrict the freedoms of parents, medical professionals, and children under Bill 26.
