98. DANDADAN (season 2)

shockingly not a shounen study friday entry! just catching up on some of the hits i missed throughout the season since i've been busy as fuck lmao. it's just as good as season 1! if not slightly better because it has a kaiju. top tier modern shounen. nuff said.
97. THE BLACK PHONE

ethan hawke and the kids all do a great job, and i really enjoy the aesthetic, tone and premise. some elements i felt were unnecessary or silly, and i wish the grabber and some of his victims had more substance instead of it all being so vague, but it came together! solid!
96. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (2025)

barely coherent. one of the weakest slasher scripts in years. definitive proof that the first film did NOT need any sequels- let alone a legasequel that trashes what little good it had. props for visually acknowledging the third films zombie fisherman tho.
95. CHAINSAW MAN (season 1) (rewatch)

this time, on a VERY SPECIAL installment of shounen study fridays...
94. BILLY & MANDY'S BIG BOOGEY ADVENTURE (rewatch)

GRIM: BILLY! STOP GIVIN' GENERAL SKARR SLEEPIN' PILLS!

BILLY: DEHUEHUEHUEH! HE AIN'T NEVER GONNA WAKE UP!!!!!
93. ROOFMAN

no frills dramady that hits all the right notes! the cast holds everything together and keeps the entire film simultaneously light-hearted and grounded. there are multiple scenes where the main character pawns off sealed copies of the simpsons hit & run for xbox and i wanted to GET him.
92. TALK TO ME

didn't think a premise like "tiktok teens become addicted to getting ghost high" would get me invested, but this movie downright floored me. probably one of the best original horror films i've seen in a while! had an absolutely dreadful time and loved every second of it.
91. LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL

could have been great with better direction. i love the script and performances. there's strong set design and moments of tension- especially at the end- but the execution fumbles all the good the film has going for it. very disappointing. poster goes hard tho!
90. GINGER SNAPS (rewatch)

epitome of a perfect 8/10 from the Y2K horror crop. does jennifer's body somehow less subtly but actually has a point and gives weight to all of its characters. wish it had more of an ending but the practical effects rule, the music rules, the leads rule. good shit.
89. READY OR NOT

another radio silence banger! these guys always impress and this was no exception. not usually a fan of these plots, but there's just enough fuckery to keep things compelling all around. samara weaving, if you're reading this, i'd just like one chance. RIP damn daniel.
88. GREEN ROOM (rewatch)

deserves far more credit and recognition than its given. fun cast, great dialogue, grungy bottle setting and schlubby neo-nazis getting murked without payoff. one of the main characters just straight up looks like he's cosplaying zoro one piece. it's peak.
87. THEY/THEM (dropped)

this tepid focus tested dogshit accomplishes nothing for no one and not even kevin bacon can save its. well y'know.

got to the part where they start glee clubbing P!NK and just couldn't take it anymore. fuck this movie.
86. THE LIGHTHOUSE (rewatch)

eggers' best and one of the best modern uses of black and white! enjoyed it even more on rewatch, nasty jokes and spontaneous pet play included. eggers has basically perfected the slowburn descent into madness and every piece falls into place with that final shot.
85. THE SCOOBY DOO PROJECT (rewatch)

shockingly thorough parody! also yeah. scuffed choice to throw on here since its just a collection of interstitials, but i thought you guys should know that i originally had this rated higher than the original on letterboxd.
84. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (rewatch)

rare instance where the trailblazer is still the absolute best in show. found footage films after blair witch attempted to yank its style but could never replicate what made it successful: how sincere and natural it all feels. real, unfortunate, human agony.
83. NIGHT SWIM

ghost pool? ghost pool. ghost pool that eats people to grant wishes. okay. sure. fucking whatever man. i don't care anymore.
82. SON OF THE MASK (rewatch)

a film whose trailer gave me LEGITIMATE PTSD symptoms as a child. i did force myself to watch it growing up once or twice as a form of exposure therapy, but seeing it in full again as an adult was just upsetting. nothing about it works. it's an abomination against god.
81. PERFECT BLUE (2025 remaster)

antiviral -> smile 2 -> HIM -> perfect blue is such a strange marathon of similar thematic intent. i'd say it caused whiplash, but it's a shockingly coherent thru line even with such disparate quality.
79. SMILE 2

got what i expected! slightly more better than the first, but my only expectation for a smile film is its fun factor. it's just as much of a manic thrill ride and the scares pack a punch, but it's not deep. i'm just happy original, schlocky horror is still a popular item on the menu.
78. ANTIVIRAL

sterile AND disgusting with the wackiest worldbuilding this side of pixar's cars. on a surface level there are interesting themes, but it's so vague and oddly placid for such an insane premise. brandon's first has cronenberg taste, but no substance. hope possessor works better!
77. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (rewatch)

done on a whim to celebrate the announcement of the upcoming sequel! i go back and forth on feeling if it's not quite as good as i'd like or if it's one of the best post-golden efforts- but i can recite the film almost line for line and that counts for something.
76. TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL (rewatch)

hillbilly hamlet that upturns every cliche outback slasher convention into a hilarious miscommunication fiasco. i was worried this wouldn't hold up, but its compassionate to the title characters in a way most films wouldn't allow- farce or otherwise. good shit!
75. HOMESTUCK: THE ANIMATED PILOT

mixed in execution, but i'm cautiously optimistic about where a full series could go! i admire how much of act 1 they crammed into 11 minutes. fun framing, great voice acting and fantastic animation! just needs refinement, a better pace, and WAY less spindleisms.
74. DOROHEDORO (rewatch)

part two of the 3x MAPPA SHOUNEN STUDY FRIDAYS COMBO!
