As singer, my body is my instrument, so I don't want to get sick. Additionally, one of my best friends is immunocompromised, so masking makes it so I can see her in person without getting her sick
Sometimes when people ask me why I’m wearing a mask I say I’m traveling or have some important thing soon and can’t afford to get sick and miss it and that’s pretty much always true but I think it would be nice if it were more normalized to just say “I don’t want to get sick” and leave it at that

At rehearsal last night, the music notation software nerd in me was delightfully surprised to see that the digital edition that tablet users are using of Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium, for our Portland Symphonic Choir Wintersong concert, was engraved using Lilly Pond. 1/3

I got a flu booster today and it made me reflect on the sense of national accomplishment I felt when I drove to a public facility, waited in my car until my number was called on an app, and got my first covid jab. It's fucked the right gets to erase what a moment of technological liberation that was

Last night I submitted my third grant application this year, and, even with the possibility of rejection, I think the act of grant writing is a form of self love because it shows that you believe in yourself enough to ask for money from someone to help put an idea, project, or art out into the world

You know you're a composer when you type part into your phone and Pärt is one of the options for autocorrect 😂

Yes! I love vocal chamber music, and wish there were more opportunities to write for singers that included more than just piano for the accompaniment.
Classical chamber music circles regularly exclude singers, as if we don't belong in those circles or rep with voices isn't "real" chamber music.
It's time for that to end.

Composers check out this opportunity!
Composers and new-music folks!

I host a nationally-distributed contemporary classical radio show, and for this December I’m looking for music about:

- snow, ice, cold
- stillness, stars, night
- holiday-adjacent
- renewal

Bonus points if it’s a commercial release, but not a requirement!

Composers, have you ever written something that you were like that could live rent free in my for a little while? That happened while setting Emily Dickinson's Hope is the thing with feathers for choir tonight and now really I'm looking forward to hearing a choir sing it someday

More people need to understand the massive negative externalities - and huge bloody bills - imposed on the entire world wide web by LLMs.

The sense of entitlement to other people's labour and other organisations's hugely increased monthly overheads of the tech bros is nothing short of depraved.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 — a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

This is a friendly reminder that library cards are free, and your local public library will never make you pay extra so you don't have to watch ads.

Just in case it was unclear, I do not believe that the risk transphobia poses to cis women is the sole reason we should support and protect trans and non-binary people. Rather, we should fight for trans rights because trans people are fellow humans who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
Every centrist podcast bro telling us that sacrificing trans rights is the only way to win in 2028 is overlooking the reality that the logical extension of policing gender expression is targeting cis women who, like, wear pants
I’ve noticed how often even well-meaning cis white men just *totally miss* that the Musk/Trump regime are obviously driven by overt and hideous misogyny, in addition to overt and hideous racism.
