So, to save the clicks: Trump had already appointed a prosecutor to the EDVA, who he then fired (or allowed to resign), and Sam Alito wrote a brief declaring that a president only gets to appoint one prosecutor per district (all others need Senate or court approval).

He appealed to SCOTUS b/c the court didn't give him a trial. He didn't get a trial b/c he didn't provide discovery in such an egregiously obstinate way that the court rendered a default judgment. But it's the 1st Amendment that needed upheld, right...
