Kinda funny, but I basically created the warlock class back in AD&D. Zanatose, my ridiculous lich, used a petrified god heart from the Astral Plane as a phylactery. It also allowed him to "answer" prayers from trusted minions, thus creating a weaker sort of cleric class.

If you're playing a wizard, there are a few spells that you should use no matter what your specialty is, and this includes BG3. Mage Armor, Shield, and Mirror Image. With these, you're basically unstoppable at even a low level with a much higher armor class than other characters.
