"For the next five minutes, the woman listened as four men — a prosecutor, defense attorney, judge and police detective — debated what, exactly, Rogers meant by vagina."

Hard to say what's the most shocking part of this @investigatewest.bsky.social series. But this courtroom dialogue is up there.

Idaho's prison sex abuse law only protects inmates when genital contact is involved, making it hard to prosecute prison staff. Even when charges are filed, plea deals allow accused guards to escape prison time while victims serve years for drug offenses, DUIs and parole violations bit.ly/42CqXQE

In one 9-minute interview with a sergeant accused of raping an inmate, detectives never directly asked him if he had sex with the woman. They didn't ask if he offered to waive a disciplinary write-up in exchange for oral sex. Or if he knew that she was pregnant when she was released bit.ly/4mXnGT3
In Idaho prisons, abuse by guards is rarely investigated

In summer 2024, 7 women accused Idaho prison workers of sexual misconduct. The allegations spanned decades, took place at various facilities and involved different perpetrators. One thread connects the claims: none were thoroughly investigated by state police. www.investigatewest.org/case-closed-...

“Stillbirth is such a huge public health issue,” one expert said. “The fact that we have this investment of centers that are going to be taking these different approaches to fight stillbirth ... it’s a piece of hope that I think we all needed.”

When Oregon mapped wildfire risks to properties, some insurance brokers and homeowners blamed the map, without evidence, for policy cancellations and price hikes.

Others called it part of a big plan to “depopulate rural areas.”

After Oregon’s record-breaking fire season in 2020, lawmakers wanted to map out which properties were most at risk. But anger from homeowners escalated quickly.

How much of the difference in Boise's case is related to shifts from the 2023 property tax law? (It's referenced in the story but I can't tell how much of the Boise difference is directly or indirectly related? Def might just be my comprehension failure.)

Another OUTSTANDING article on #Idaho's "system" that's been broken for 70 years.

It's a very grim situation, but I am heartened by the coroners who gave serious study & thought about how to do better 👏👏👏

However, I remain completely dismayed by "more of the same," which is why we're STILL here 😒
Torey Danner, the association’s president and a member of the governor’s subcommittee studying the issue, told ProPublica that his focus this year is on “low-hanging fruit” rather than major systemic changes. Asked about approaches that have gotten results in other states, he said he wants to review the root causes of Idaho’s problems before committing to any specific reform ideas, so that Idaho doesn’t unintentionally implement “Band-Aid” solutions in haste.

Danner said he didn’t see Roberts’ 118-page report come through his email inbox in October but plans to read it after being contacted by ProPublica. He has not deeply studied the reforms in other states.
