I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

What an unsurprising decision by corporations that desperately need to make money with AI. If every other company with a chatbot isn't already doing this, then expect them to be following Meta's lead soon. The chatbot is not your friend; it's a corporate listening device. www.ft.com/content/22f7...

Meta will use conversations people have with its chatbots to personalise advertising and content across its platforms, in a sign of how tech companies plan to make money from artificial intelligence.

The owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp on Wednesday said it would use the content of chats with its Meta AI to create advertising recommendations across its suite of apps.

“People will already expect that their Meta AI interactions are being used for these personalisation purposes,” said Christy Harris, privacy and data policy manager at Meta.

Hey Colorado residents, particularly people in Fort Collins, but also those who are somewhat near: my sister and brother in law are running a study on an easy, portable method to help maintain indoor air quality during adverse outside events (like smoke or pollution).

i don’t think the moon should be a priority but i also think that if it’s going to be, it’s helpful not to completely fuck STEM funding streams that create scientists but I’m just a scientist with public policy experience so what do I know

Calls for the United States to return astronauts to the moon before the end of the decade have been increasingly loud and frequent, emanating from bipartisan lawmakers and science advocates alike. But underlying that drumbeat is a quagmire of epic proportions.

Brief life update: On Monday I resigned from my appointment at Lowell Observatory. I wish my remaining friends and colleagues the best of luckin their endeavors in increasing new visitor center visitation, and continuing to pursue world-class research in the face of having ended tenure today.

I’m sorry this was necessary, but admire your strong statement. ❤️‍🔥

I’ve always thought this! All those words are carefully defined before that scene so that Bigwig’s defiance needs no translation. Huge payoff.

Ohio State just advised all staff and students not to attend the SACNAS (Society for the advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science) annual meeting of 6000+ scientists -- which is in Columbus, OH this year! -- saying it may be exclusionary, even though it is open to all.

🔭 Heads up, #Denver! Our next FREE star party is happening this Saturday! Come on over to look through our telescopes, tour the historic building, and meet our amazing @uofdenver.bsky.social physics students! ✨

Interior of the University of Denver's historic Chamberlin Observatory. A long white telescope stands on a black pillar in the center of a round room with brick red walls and a curved gray ceiling. The telescope is pointing out an opening in the dome toward a dark blue sky. People are standing around the room waiting their turn to climb a ladder at right that allows them to look through the telescope.

Disney reverses course on Kimmel. Lessons:

-Trump's anti-Constitutional stances, anti-1A in this case, are unpopular
-Popular resistance via expression and spending choices can have an impact
-Many corporate leaders are weak, amoral people who'll bow to threats unless they face countervailing ones

The Fall/Autumnal Equinox is TODAY at 2:19 PM EDT. That's the time at which our Sun is directly over the Earth's equator, signaling the start of Northern Hemisphere astronomical fall. The Earth’s northern hemisphere will continue to tilt further from the sun through the Winter Solstice on Dec 21.
