The Thyferran gave her a soft smile. “No, it’s fine, I don’t mind,” he said. He took a deep breath, seeming to steel himself against the tide of memories into which he was about to wade.

“Sijda was… well, she was a complicated person,” Armin began. “She’d led a pretty hard life. Orphaned, put into slavery by the Empire, ended up on Despayre. She managed to break free, escaped with another prisoner named Rianna Saren, and went rogue for a while. Got mixed up with a guy, Mal Rencorn. He was… I guess he was the first guy she actually loved. Probably the only one, who knows.

“Anyway, the two went on the run from the Empire, but he got caught. Tortured, pumped for information he didn’t have. Then he died,” Armin said, frowning. “I… I was the one. I did it. I don’t think Sijda ever forgave me for it.”

Serah’s eyes widened in shock. “You…?”
