Want to know more about how the overlap of religious, ethnic, geographic, and economic identities contribute to religious discrimination? This piece I wrote with Nikola Mirilovic and Jonathan Fox now has been assigned to a "print" issue.

The last 13 living Israeli hostages have reportedly been transferred to the ICRC.

Meanwhile, videos of Hamas beating & executions of Gazan "collaborators" keep pouring out of the Strip.

Unless Hamas is permenantly defanged as req by the ceasefire agreement, this will remain the norm.

Hamas has transferred 7 hostages to the ICRC, who are now finally on their way home to Israel. 13 more living hostages, who have spent 2 years in hell, still awaiting release.🎗

Behind the veil of ignorance, we are all John Rawls (potentially)

@avishaybsg.bsky.social hits it out of the park.

Hamas hasn’t said yes, and even if it does, implantation is going to be fraught. Still, getting Netanyahu to sign off on Trump’s Gaza deal is a real achievement and one I’m not sure anyone else, let alone a democrat could have achieved. Why? Well I’m glad you asked. 1/

Harris could not have forced Netanyahu to even be in the same hemisphere as a deal that has some of these elements

🧵 Who's the most informed about American politics? Very lefty seculars.

My new FREE study @sfjournal.bsky.social finds atheists/agnostics, especially if they are politically sorted, score higher on knowledge of basic civics & current politics than other groups. 1/ academic.oup.com/sf/advance-a...

No, really my hope was that you would repost what you wrote on Facebook for readers here. No matter. Bluesky is a... particular audience.

Far too modest, but thank you
arielzellman.bsky.social
But that requires a level of coordination and understanding between Israel and intl stakeholders that neither end seems particularly interested in committing to. But it is our responsibility to open up this possibility.

The hope and intent would be, recognizing ideal may be far from reality, that israel has already captured and cleared the spaces any multinational force would begin operating in.

And, for what it's worth, I really hope @sfrantzman.bsky.social l will share his insights that prompted this thread here on Bluesky.

The time to have begun this work was 23 months ago, 12 months ago, 6 months ago, a month ago, it was last week, and it is today. 17/n

This war will only end when we, Israelis, make it end. And this will only happen when we make the possibility of a "day after" a reality. We are a tremendous country and society full of intelligent, innovative, and hard-working people. We are more than capable. 16/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
We are not going to achieve miracles in Gaza and Hamas is not going to give up without taking every man, woman, and child in Gaza to the grave with them. 15/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
Nearly two years of bloody, awful war under the most wantonly selfish and irresponsible leadership my country has ever had, serves as a constant reminder to "temper" my expectations. 14/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
I dream to see Hamas raise the white flag and see their remaining leaders flee into exile. I pray that a rebuilt, better life and promise for a peaceful future for the people of Gaza starts today. 13/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
Like most Israelis, I hope this latest military campaign in Gaza City will actually be the final one and that it will finally end this war. I would love to see our hostages be rescued from their captors by heroic commandos rather than "exchange" them for the release of violent terrorists. 12/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
But the violent quagmire in Gaza is still our violent quagmire and the failure to even attempt to pursue a more responsible military and, more importantly, political strategy is still our failure. 11/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
These same motivations are readily apparent for anyone with open eyes and ears, as the accusations of Israeli-inflicted famine, ethnic cleansing, and genocide are magnified by selective evidence, "flexible" definitions, shoddy analysis, predetermined conclusions, and hateful wishful thinking. 10/n

...and supported Israel in isolating Hamas financially, diplomatically, and militarily, and yes, offering concrete assistance to build a Hamas-free future for Gazans (see above). This didn't happen and the reasons range from vilely malicious to wantonly apathetic. 9/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
Yes, the world would have been a vastly different place if on October 8, 2023, leaders of "responsible" powerful states and international institutions quickly and unequivocally condemned Hamas's genocidal carnage, demanded their arrest and prosecution by the ICC, immediate release of hostages, 8/n

... back for potentially deadly reserve duty on endless rotations, seemingly no closer to an end to the madness in Gaza, prolonging needless suffering and inflicting wanton destruction on the people of Gaza.7/n

And so we find ourselves increasingly politically isolated, economically strained, and popularly condemned as génocidaires, angry exhausted and more politically divided then ever, sending our parents, children, friends, neighbors, students, teachers, coworkers (and on and on) 6/n
arielzellman.bsky.social
Instead, our leaders promised vengeance for October 7th, "absolute victory" v Hamas, absolute rejection of any kind of independent Palestinian future, and return of the hostages if convenient, castigating the idea of planning for a day after as defeatist and those who promoted it as traitors. 5/n

and (3) replace (bring in international peacekeepers, set up a transitional authority engaging responsible regional and local actors, provide a pathway for a better day after) in each new territory we entered. 4/n
