That is fabulous. And what’s a lovely thing to do. They’ll light up when they see it.

Drives me insane, but the ones who renew without even notifying you are the worst.

Reasons why Kathy Burke is the best amongst us, pt247:
She kindly offered to send a copy of her book. I explained living in a rural property in Costa Rica with no real postal address (I gave her what passes for our address to demonstrate) would be a logistical nightmare for her.
Two weeks later:
A Mind Of My Own by Kathy Burke.

Another totally misleading headline in the Mail. What Palma is actually doing is stopping any new holiday let licences and banning party boats in the bay. The existing 639 tourist apartments carry on as before.
Headline in the Mail “Now Majorca’s capital tells tourists: Don’t visit”, which is untrue as Palma is just not allowing new holiday lets.

Her opening scene was just jawdroppingly good.

Sounds divine but would recommend a jaunt to Segovia - purely for compare and contrast purposes of course - to try the cochinillo at Cándido and José Maria at a quarter of the price.

It’s Bookshop Day so here’s a poem in celebration of all those amazing bookshops out there.
Never Judge a Bookshop by its Cover

It may call itself a bookshop, but don’t be fooled by that.
There may be books in the window, on the tables and shelves,
but really, it’s a travel agent selling all-immersive holidays,
weekend breaks, first-class tickets to other worlds,

with a low carbon footprint. It’s a pharmacy as well,
dispensing medicines, pick-me-ups, balms: if symptoms persist,
please consult your local bookseller; it’s a tailor’s, offering
a made-to-measure service to achieve the perfect fit;

and a hardware store, with a range of empowering tools
to fix you up, recharge your batteries, switch on lightbulbs.
Its walls are lined with treasure as precious as any jeweller’s,
and twice as bright. Spines shine gold, silver, sapphire, emerald;

there are diamonds amongst them. It’s a garden centre,
a place where ideas get planted and a thousand stories bloom,
and a greengrocer, selling fresh, locally-sourced produce,
as vital as your five-a-day and more readily consumed.
It’s a multiscreen cinema. Peek behind the curtain
of each jacket and you’ll find a movie waiting silently to begin.
A stationer’s supplying notepads, reams of paper,
with the words conveniently filled in

to save you both the time and bother. A wholefood store
and a fast-food joint. A cosy haven from the cold.
A friendly, family restaurant: Today’s special will revive
a flagging spirit and restore a lagging soul.

It’s a tourist information centre equipped with maps
and helpful guides to steer us on our way.
A busy square in which a whole town gathers
or just a place to hold the world at bay

for a few untroubled stolen minutes. It’s itself,
and yet it’s something larger, a universe so vast
you could spend ten thousand lifetimes there –
it may call itself a bookshop, but don’t be fooled by that.

What? Next you’ll be telling me you can just have a small beer or two if you want.

Imagine the *rage* that a sulky HP would unleash if treated like that! And yes, laptop, ipad, no problem, no faffing about.

I still marvel that the Brother printer - bought on your recommendation - just quietly prints, no fuss, no stress, even though I probably only switch it on every couple of months.

Lunch time in 1772, as beautifully (and mouth-wateringly) evoked by Luis Egidio Meléndez of Madrid. It's his day today.

🇪🇸La Comunidad Weekend🇪🇸

I wrote about my week in Madrid (as a tourist) through the lens of where the city has been and where it's going.

Enjoy, share, gracias!

My mum and her sisters often wore matching outfits - made by my nan - when they were children. This implanted some magic sartorial connection between them which means that now they will often discover that, entirely without planning, they have all independently purchased the same item of clothing.

Trivia on 'trivia'

In ancient Rome, a trivium was an intersection of three roads (tri, "three" + vium, road).

According to the Romans, when people met at a trivium, they would discuss trivialis ("inconsequential things") - which eventually helped give trivia its modern meaning.
