I received this email about Democrats caving to end the shutdown from one of the SNAP recipients I spoke to:

I should also clarify that I am sharing this as a journalist. Our healthcare system is inherently broken, but now the tape and chewing gum that was holding it together is gone, too.

I'll make it work, but so, so many people won't be able to.
As an entrepreneur who uses "Obamacare" for their healthcare coverage, I looked up my rates today.

The cheapest individual rates START at $409/mo.

There are also less plan options, and not a single one of them considers one of KC's largest medical providers as "in network."

Age 18 - Can join the military, buy a house, get married, and go into devastating student loan debt
Age 21 - Can drink alcohol
Age 25 - Can run for U.S. House of Rep
Age 30 - Can run for U.S. Senate
Age 35 - Can run for President of the United States

Just in case anyone needed a reminder...
It’s all just so gross and absurd. Words that also happen to describe the VP.

I've seen posts expressing frustration that Department of Education/disability stuff firings isn't in the news. Some places have covered it, but I encourage people to recognize that journalists are humans who can't do everything on the weekend when we need to rest.

On Friday, my first article for National Geographic went live!!!

It was so fun combining my history and gaming expertise to dig into the influence of Miyamoto Musashi on modern pop culture like the new Ghost of Yotei. Literal dream assignment.

The truth behind the legend of Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s greatest samurai
Miyamoto Musashi’s duels made him a legend. His writings made him immortal. Here’s what history can (and can't) confirm about the man behind the myth.

Illinois State Senator Karina Villa sprang into action to protect her community from ICE raids, alerting neighbors to their rights and chasing off masked agents. This is how you stand up to authoritarianism. We should all be inspired by Sen. Villa's courage.

Went to get my Covid and flu vaccines and was told that my insurance will only cover it if it’s through their special program at CVS. 🙃

I asked how much it would be without insurance.

The flu? Around $20. But COVID?

Over $200.

I call this my “good stuff people said about me” folder and use it for any time that work is especially stressful, depressing, or difficult. Highly recommend.
When someone says something kind about my work, I take a screenshot, and when the bad brain starts, I look at the screenshot gallery and tell myself that even if only these handful of folks ever read my work, it connected with them and meant something. Which means everything.
Guys what do you do when you suffer from imposter syndrome real bad? Like brain being really mean telling you nothing you ever did is good enough and people are just laughing at how bad you are?

Please no compliments or anything, really just looking for inspirational memes or such that helped you.

While some journalists are certainly guilty of this, the truth is, writers (and even editors) are rarely in control of what can actually make it to print. Newspapers are largely owned by the very billionaires that are benefiting from Trump. Even getting a story with two sides might be a win.
Pritzker: To the members of the press who are assembled here today and listening across the country, I am asking for your courage to tell it like it is. This is not a time to pretend here that there are two sides to this story.

Masked raids are tools of fear, not freedom. Despite what this administration wants you to believe, they are not about “safety.” They are about letting ICE agents hide from accountability while carrying out inhumane acts.

I mean this from my heart.

That is the experience of every Black woman in corporate America.

White people agreeing with you behind the scenes but leaving you out to swim alone and fight everybody’s battles with ZERO public support
And certain TX politicians are calling her “a hero” rather than going down there and raising hell to get her out. Unserious.
“Voting blue is still better.”

The white folks are holding a sitting Black representative HOSTAGE and them fuckers aint doing shit about it. Kiss my ass.

To be clear, Rep. Collier is being held against her will in a government building by our government.

This is so far beyond red lines and warning bells.

Today I spent two hours looking for a statistic on homelessness in the U.S. that used to be publicly available in a 10 second search through government websites.

The line has been bright red since January.
The moment he named his platform “Truth Social” we were headed this way.
