Cold winter temperatures bring dwindling insect populations, and a few bat species to migrate south to warmer climates, but most hibernate locally in places like former mines, natural caves and abandoned railroad tunnels.
The Somerville Environmental Commission recently led a tree planting and habitat restoration project along the Peter’s Brook Greenway, near the Van Fleet garden.

The meadow is located in a large grassy field near the Twp’s library and recycling facility. As the area is frequented by birds, two birdhouses are located nearby and are the reason for the meadow’s naming.
